I hope that some-one can confirm I have been given wrong informatuon here. I have heard that two police operational dogs a GSD youngster and a Mali have died in the heat of their car. I can`t find any details of it, and I sincerely hope its wrong.

The guy responsible is not an operational dog handler. He used to be until he was given a supervisory role at the dog training establishment.
5 years ago he did the same thing and despite a full investigation, he was not found guilty of anything more than an accident!!!
Oh and he was promoted AFTER he had killed the first 2 dogs.

GSDUK how do you know it is the same person responsible for the other two shepherd car deaths?
It doesnt mention this as a fact in any of the news reports. AS

I read a statement (not a Police statement) from a retired dog handler that worked with him.
If you would rather catch up via the media.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2008691/Sergeant-Ian-Craven-suicide-bid-police-dogs-die-heat-car.html includes news of his attempted suicide which the BBC are at the moment reporting as a hand injury.

In the news article it states there had been two incidences.. one in 2009 and this one which has just occured.. I think it a shame that the Officer would not consider the health and welfare of the animals.. Hopefully he is repremanded and dismissed from duties.

Thankyou GSDUK, shame his suicide bid was unsuccessful it would have ensured there were no more poor, innocent dogs getting murdered while supposedly in the 'care' of this outrageously, irresponsible and inconsiderate officer. The BBC probably hit it right on the button reporting it as a hand injury, as its more than likely that his failed bid was just a pathetic ploy at trying to get some sympathy for himself, (the selfish prat) than a real 'serious' suicide attempt. No-one who is seriously contemplating suicide does so by making moves which immediately alerts others such as was reported i.e when he jumped out of his colleagues car, pleeeze, in anyone this thick to be drawn in by that? Suicide is too quick a death for him anyway, his punishment should be to be locked up in what, during the WW11, were refered to as 'Coolers' and left there to fry. I would do it too, this guy is a repeat offender so no excuses and absolutely no sympathy for him, only the poor dogs who suffered at his hand. AS

OK didn't see the site, however for those of us that deal with PD handlers let's look at this logically. Thjey aren't breeders, they aren't trainers and depts do NOT want to pay for training so half the time you have a first time dog owner, esp a first time working line high drive dog owner w NO training! Not to mention a trainer and certifier that had no desire to inform the poor handler and protect his dog! If dept owned they can demand what is done w the dog, so before we hang this poor guy while yes sad how many of you have done his job? I'm sure it was NOT intentional! I would not sell that dept a dog however still not probably his fault!

I understand he previously killed a springer spaniel the same way just 2 years ago. Yes the dogs that died were a mal and a GSD puppy. Poor, poor dogs.
A Shepherd: you echo my feelings exactly. When I heard he had 'attempted' suicide, all I said was what a damn shame he failed.
Donnerstorm: This ***** is not a first time dog owner. He just happens to have killed a dog before. You might think that having done that he would never, ever be so stupid again. This is a police officer, a sergeant and so you would also assume some level of intelligence to be present. I and millions upon millions of other people were first time dog owners once, and managed not to kill our dogs, usually by employing good old common sense and consideration for another living thing.
What genius I wonder decided that someone who had negligently killed a dog in a hot car previously should be promoted and put in charge of .... a dog unit. He should never have been allowed near a dog again. In fact, if he couldn't manage to look after a dog, it doesn't give me much faith in his ability/judgement to be a police officer at all. He should lose his job, and so should the genius that put him in charge of a dog unit.
