a lot of people here use the definition real and serious
by serious do people just mean that the dog doesnt view every person as a friend? like astranger approaches the dogs house or yard a serious dog will get on guard and defend its property while a non serious dog might try to befriend the stranger? may bark for attention etc..
non serious dogs could still bark but they wont be defending for real they will just be barking cause they are excited?
Also a serious dog will take an eye stare from a human as a threat while a so call non serious dogs will ignore it like it never happend?
Sorry i just see people mention this a lot was just curious if what i thought was right

I think a serious dog is a civil dog that is willing to follow through on a threat, not sleeve happy or equipment oriented but.... serious!

ok red your avatar is amazing. but i do agree a serious dog is a dog that means buisness no half ass biteing the dog will grab you and do some damage.

Just because a stranger approaches and a dog wants to befriend (go up sniff him out/ pay him not mind afterwards) it doesnt mean it is not serious....Thats called clear headedness....
Dogs are very perceptive when it comes to people and can sense in a matter of seconds if that person intends harm or not at that moment..
And thats what you should look for....unless it (the person approaching) is actually doing something in a threatening way the Shepherd should React/act accordingly no questions about it...
When the time comes to engage a threat (act/react) is the only time a dog should be barking and carrying on...
