Obviously I am new here :) And have lots of questions. Never had a GSD puppy, always got adult dogs from rescues. I saw a puppy at a training facility last week with a little contraption on his head that they said was there to train his ears to stand up. Is this something you have to do with all puppies? I thought they just grew that way! I am thinking about adding a puppy to our family but want to get ALL the facts before even thinking about it!

Some lines have larger  ears and may need help standing.  Strong ears is a must for me and  I've never had a dog that had ears that didn't easily stand on their own.  Usually smaller ears stand without assistance.

Check out the parents and ask a breeder before purchasing a pup. Hopefully they are honest with you. :)

Puppies ears vary in the time they take to stand up. They can also come up and go down again while puppy is teething.  This can continue for around the first 6 months , but after that they usually stay up all the time, although may not always be very erect, particularly if running or if dog is relaxed. The ears may stand up as early as 5 weeks, but it is not unusual to take 10-12 weeks.  They are oftern tipped inwards or folded when they first stand up. This usually changes as puppy grows.

Ears should not generally need assistance to stand up. Your breeder should have checked that the pedigree of the dogs used to breed with do not contain any obvious ear problems. Look at size of ears and the way they are set on dogs head. Ears can be slow to stand if a low grade infection is present. Check to see if there is any redness, smell or excess dirt in the ear, if so they may need to be treated by a vet.

Ears can be taped to help them stand, and I have seen a variety of methods used for "EAR HATS", ranging from inserts, so super glue and pop sticks. Care must always be taken to keep ears reasonably clean, baby wipes are good for wiping ears as they are usually the correct PH balance for the skin and reduce the chance of introducing irritation.

I hope this helps with your questions on "Puppy Ears". and good luck in your research for your next loyal family member.

Thank you! I dont know where this puppy that I saw came from but it was at a training facility that just trains, no breeding. I was checking out what it takes to train a GSD from a puppy. Looks like lots of fun work! I am checking out lots of breeders because I do want a good quality dog!
