His name is Nordic

by His name is Nordic on 19 June 2011 - 10:06

I am a 32 y/o female disabled vet and I have been blessed to have been matched with a 2 y/o male Swiss Shepherd as my service dog. I am Totally in love with him and the breed! I think Nordic is the best thing ever happened to me. Amazing that inside of a couple months of being attached to him 24/7 how much he has changed me into a better person. I know a dog can touch anyone but a dog trained Specifically for this job is especially awesome to see working... Nordic heels perfect with a hands-free leash in public, goes to the bathroom on command, and besides retreiving objects and being my constant companion he also has this uncanny ability to know my moods and react accordingly. A Great example was the other day. There was a death in the family. I was crying and hurting pretty bad. Nordic was laying on a the floor, asleep, when suddenly he leaps up and bounds off into our room... And comes back smiling and happy with his favorite stuffed wiener dog, prancing around and jumping in front of me... It was too funny! And it really made me think: how doggone intelligent and caring he is!

Nordic has been in training since he was 10 months. His trainer, Susan, is an amazing person! She took an abandoned 10 months old pup into her program and held onto him for 2 years and trained him for medical alert; he can smell seizures, low blood sugar, and even panic attakcs before they happen! As I said I am a disabled vet so he fills a gap in my life that was torn open nearly 10 years ago when I was a young gal in the US Navy. In short; I intend to give back by taking an intensive 8 week training course designed to teach me how to train dogs; then move onto the next course which will teach me how to train service dogs so I can train them and donate them to needy vets such as I was.

He is a very handsome white dog that receives non-stop attention out in public, as when people see him out n about with me in his blue vest he literally tuns heads and people come up to me all the time wanting to pet him or inquire about him.  No one has ever denied me access because of his breed type; which is amazing because GSD's sadly have a poor view in the public eye.  I treally hope to establish that GSD's CAN and ARE the best for service work.  Yeah - I have seen some threads on here about people thinking they have to have a "protection dog" but no one ever knows that their dog, bonded to them, are capable of protecting them in the right situation.

My Nordic is NOT aggressive nor was he EVER trained for protection (it is actually against the law to train a service dog for that) but I had just gotten him and brought him to the home I was living in with a very emotionally abusive husband.  Within 5 seconds of walking in the door my dog had his hair standing on end and growled at the guy!  I was blown away.  I called the trainer immediately and asked her about this; she said in the two years she has had Nordic he NEVER growled at any one and that I should NOT allow him to do this and Should sharply correct him Immediately.  The next day the guy came home and Nordic growled at him when he came into the bed room where I was napping.  I corrected him sharply; and took him for a walk.  We came back into the house and when the guy came around the corner Nordic's hackles were up and he growled at him again!  We then got into a nasty fight and Nordic got immediately in between me and him and stared him down the entire time.   I then called Susan; she asked how we were doing and I told her everything and added that Nordic was STILL growling at the now ex-husband.  She told me the best thing I have heard in my life: pack your things and get out of there NOW

yep your dog is your best judge of character a German Shepherd you DO NOT need to train to protect you the training is relly just how to control it and tell them to attack what u want them to attack. i had a male who loved everyone but was a good schutzhund dog wonderful boy and my car wouldent let the key in so this mexican worker at a gas station says that he thinks he can help my boy is in his crate in the back this mexican sits down in my car and starts messing with it all the suddon the man starts sweating and trying to work faster i get closer to the car and my dog is growling at this guy  i have never heard this growl from my boy and i dont believe you should ever scold a dog for protecting you EVER if it is the rite situation. now if you are in a store and he growls at someone i would just give a quick correction and move away from the person as he does not need to in public but a dangerous person inside your home let him protect you that is what he is there for.

my female is a trained search and rescue dog we where out on a pratice search she never knew the guy she was searching for when she gets close to him she just starts this very defencive barking apparently the guy was a known criminal. but she knew right away. i trust my dogs completely and when ever i get a new BF he dosent have to just impress me he has to impress my 4 leggid friends before hes alowed to my house.

i am happy for you to have a good loyal friend who you can take places and thank you so much for serving good luck and may your boy live a long healthy life takeing care of you.
