OK little history- Axel has been on TOTW since we brought him home at 8 weeks old. He's now 15 months old and we've always rotated between the duck- "Wetlands" and the fish "Pacific". over the last month or so I've had trouble getting him to even eat 3 cups a day without something added like yogurt or peanut butter or even an egg. So Tractor Supply had all flavors on sale for 39.00 so I bought the bison/venison "High Prarie" so anyhow when I cut open the bag of High Prarie it was the most atrocious smelling stuff I've ever smelled-wow!!. I also tried a "taste test" for my dog I put out 1 cup of 4 types of food- the 3 flavors of TOTW duck, fish, bison, and the fourth food was Tractor Supply's 4Health Lamb and Rice formula. Axel devoured the 4Health and the TOTW duck he nibbled at. He literally turned away from the fish and bison formulas-can't say that I blame him on the bison.....lol. I know TOTW has had issues before but now that I think of it the last "Pacific" bag we bought had a very strong smell not quite rancid like bad fish but it was kinda strong. And now the bison experience is really got me thinking and asking questions now.

Anyhow Axel has just been to the vet on his birthday for his yearly visit and the vet was just a little concerned -(but not worried)  about his weight. He weighed in at 77 lbs but his frame appears like he could be in the 85 range. Seems like Axel has lost a few pounds over the last couple of weeks too. I lost my first GSD to stomach cancer and maybe I'm just worrying a little too much but he will be going back in to the vet next week- I'm gonna have a blood panel done to rule out any diseases and hope that it's just a food issue. The reason for this thread is I was wondering if there was anyone else having issues with TOTW or if some of you good people could offer advice.

Thanks.

I have had no problems with it, and I have never had a bag smell bad. It may have been expired, I would return it to your feed store immediately.

Have you researched raw?

I recently switched my male to TOTW high prairie. HE loves it, I am feeding about 25% less & he is maintaining weight even though I am doing some extra conditioning with him.

Good luck,

Mike

I'd highly suggest going to the Sierra formula.  I had issues recently with TOTW as well. I got bags of Salmon with so much greasy residue that it covered my measuring cup inside and out, and it left residue in the bowl.  All of my dogs got really sick from it, and it wasn't fun to clean up.  They ate it for a couple days (hesitantly) and all of the dogs got sick both days they ate it........switched to the Lamb and they weren't sick anymore.  I will never do the Salmon or "Pacific" anymore.  Lamb has done well.  My dogs also love 4Health and do great on it, I do the Lamb for it as well when they eat it.

TOTW is made by Diamond. I tried feeding Diamond several years ago and have never encountered a dog food so inconsistent from bag to bag.

I could buy one lot, and at the time I was buying in 500# lots, and stools would be great. the next time, spray painted kennels. to me that is inconsistency in ingredients.

happy for everyone getting good results with TOTW, but I will never waste another $ on anything made by Diamond.

have to agree with rik.  i will not feed anything made by diamond.  the inconsistency is just not worth the bother.  you can feed several bags with good results, then another bag off the same store shelf will cause diarrhea, blown coat, etc.  my personal opinion is that it has something to do with storage.  who knows how many months some of these bags spend on a pallet in a warehouse, wrapped in plastic.  who knows how hot some of these warehouses get in the summer months ----- even though those particular bags may not be sold until cooler weather.  i have had both good and terrible experiences with totw.  i will not waste time or money on it again.

4Health is made by Diamond too and is very similar to Diamond Naturals with a higher price tag.

I have been feeding the TOTW lamb formula since October 2010 to my male and have had zero issues with the food. His coat is awesome and he loves the food. I went to the Taste of the Wild because I wanted a grain free food. So far the bags have been very consistant and it has smelled the same..

I,ve been feeding it for about 4 years and have no problems with weight or stools and dogs are doing just fine on it.

I also feed raw chicken in the  mornings to the adults.
