Been lurking here for a while, and enjoyed reading comments on the original schuntzhund for beginners thread (among many others threads). Since it was too old for posting too, I started SFB2. Hopefully I will soon be the proud new mom/caregiver of a GSD pup with some strong Schuntzhund ancestors. I am interested in exploring schuntzhund. But, the more I read, the more clueless I become. Can anyone recommend a good book or two for educating me (before I work with the dog)? I am 59 years old, and have always had a dog in my life. The have ranged from purebreds to Heinz 57 dogs from the Humane Society. This will be the first GS. I don't question my ability to bond with a dog and establish an alpha position. And socializing a GS will not be an issue. My new dog will go to work with me every day, where it will meet and deal with an endless stream of new humans and dogs. The comments in the original thread on trainer vs club were most interesting. Recommendations on either, in the central Ohio area would be most welcome. Nancy

I don't think many people on here have tried "schuntzhund". Perhaps, that is the cause for the crickets.

My suggestion would be to start with a club. You and your dog get exposure to a lot of different people, dogs, and training techniques. You are fotunate in that you have a very good club in central Ohio. Check out their website and give them a call, and no, I am not a member of the club.

Apologies for the misspelling. I have friends who's last name is Schuntz. Will have to watch that their "n" does not creep back into Schutzhund.

Thanks for the Mid-Ohio Club recommendation. I have had a couple of phone conversations with Jim, and will probably go out to meet the members and watch them work their dogs.

Got my girl Viktoria "Tori" late Wednesday afternoon. She is solid black, coated, and adorable. Hope she grows into them there ears! Both of which are up pretty much all the time.

I will probably go visit several clubs to get an idea of what feels right for us. Although I can't imagine club members having the time it would take to work with a green dog and an even greener owner/handler. Working with a private trainer probably makes more sense, at least to get us through BH.
