A breeder of GSDs in my home country.  Shame on them.  Terrible, the report says that the owner of the breeding kennel runs an elderly facility.  Horrid, and sick.  The report also says that the dogs are shown and run on the treadmill for several hours a day unattended, as reported by the son.  The images on the video tell enough, no need to translate.  I cannot translate...too upsetting for me.  http://tierschutznews.ch/2011/radar/europa/1627-katastrophale-bedingungen-in-schaeferhundzucht-im-westerwald-.html

I don't speak german but the dogs looked amazing. Healthy coats fantastic weight. pens were spacious and clean.  I don't get it?  Yup there were skulls there but we dont know why or what from.  I imagine top Germa kennels cull pretty hard.  I dont know what disposal laws are in Germany.  There were some kennel spinners but it can happen .  Looked like a PETA propaganda film to me... Have I really gotten that old and cynical??  I guess after I watched the PETA crew maim and slaughter a bunch of chickens I will never trust their films again.

I agree. it is nothig more then PETA propaganda.  Let them show up here tromping through the woods, they will be met by a Malinois who will not take kindly to their company.  Imagine finding skulls in the woods.

WHile I don't trust PETA, I can say that as a former biology student who spent many, many hours studying bones, those ARE definitely  dog skulls.

No doubt PETA has blown things out of proportion, but something is definitely rotten with the way this breeder is running his operation.

I used BING to translate the article. It says he was not considered a commercial kennel operation, as he ONLY had 30-40 dogs!! surprise
Come on, since when does a hobby breeder have 40 dogs?

by crhuerta on 29 May 2011 - 12:05

If the breeder is in Germany.....all the time.
30-40 dogs owned and co-owned is not out of the range for some big kennels.
They are still "hobby" breeders and not considered commercial kennels....
*I'm not positive but....I think to be considered a commercial kennel...they have to have some form of business linked to it.....ie...boarding, training, grooming...etc..
Again...not POSITIVE...but someone from Germany prev stated that to us once in conversation regarding breeding and such.....

I hope that it is propagada.  One of the things that got me was the skulls that were found in the forest.  They had found about 10 laying about some covered with some leaf litter.  They are dog skulls and it was commented that the ages of the dogs varied.  I cannot imagine that the bodies were buried.  Beyond the cause of death, the health risks of a rotting corpse is bad enough.  Not cool in the slightest.  Not sure I would want potential puppy buyers to see skulls everywhere.

by brynjulf on 29 May 2011 - 15:05

Definately dog skulls and a huge pile of cow or horse jaw bones.  I imagine when an animal dies they just take the body into the bush.  They do that in this area all the time.  Not how I dispose of a dog that passes but I dont know .  Some people do.  Here they dont put dogs down at the vet either.  They run the oldsters to the bush and shoot them.  Just a difference in cultures probably.  In Germany and elsewhere big kennels have 200 or more dogs.  This used to be the way it was in the US as well.  But as our rights are slowly being pared away kennels are getting smaller and smaller.  Anyone with alot of dogs is now immediately labels a puppy mill.  If the animal wackos had there way we would not have pets.  Having a pet is unkind don't ya know... ( eyeroll)

Doesn't it freeze in Germany something aweful ? Maybe there was no way to burry the dogs at the time of death because of the permafrost ? I have only had one adult die in a long long time, and that was afwful for me, and who knows the dates of the deaths of these dogs. It says right at the first of the film that this was a PETA film.
The Jawbones of the larger animals ? Maybe they where food.
The dogs all had Lick-its in there kennels, there was nice clean shavings in every kennel- and the dogs sure like to potty on it.. as mine do as soon as I lay it down.. The dogs appeared to be healthy.

Maybe the treadmill was really for getting miles on the dogs for the first part of the SCH test when its too cold outside to have a healthy 7 mile run ?

I couldnt get the translator to work for me. Could some one copy/paste what was said in the artical ?

Here it is, I did not translate it nor correct any grammatical errors.

After the animal rights group PETA Germany e. The anti-welfare states in Bitzen were from the animal protection society in the old churches that authority already reported, but without anything changing. On the contrary, the veterinary officer said the association for German shepherd dogs with that in the breeding everything was in order. PETA today aga
