My male has both...females are chipped!  I personally like both!

I don't feel comfortable relying on the chip, they can migrate. I have both. Theresa

If you have access to both, why not?  I always get both.

I used to do both but now rely solely on microchips.  Simply put, a tattoo is fine for identification purposes but does not provide a clear and obvious path back to the owner should something unforeseen occur.

The future is definitely leading towards chips…in fact I think the SV requires (or is going to require) chips now over tattoos for registrations. The only problem with a chip is that you need the reader. Clubs aren’t required (yet) to have a reader and it’s the owner’s responsibility to provide a reader that can read his dog’s chip. The other problem is that there isn’t a standard for chips so one brand of chip may not be readable by all readers. Best to get a universal reader and they can run between $300-$400.

All of mine have chips.

Both.

Not only can the chips migrate, they can also just plain ol' fail--trust, I deal with electronic IDs in livestock on a daily basis, and there's no end to the number of RFID tags that suddenly stop responding to a reader query, or that send back a corrupted number.  The microchip implants are equally susceptible to these issues.

And be sure to have the tattoo registered with as many databases as possible.  In the past two months, there have been two inquiries on this board trying to identify tattooed dogs in rescue/shelter channels--and so far the tattoos don't appear to have been recorded with any of the usual registries or organizations.
