I have just come home from the vets with 8 puppies, from the x-ray we thought there were 7 or possibly 8. Now she is back home it looks like there is another one in there but she is not contracting at all. The vet helped the birth a lot by stimulating contractions with a finger and by walking her between pups. She was getting tired and we used oxytocin for the last two pups, the doses were about an hour apart. So now i am not sure if I should go ahead and give another dose of oxytocin as she already had two. The last pup was born about two hours ago and I am worried because of the oxytocin given earlier and the effects this might have on the pup still inside. I tried the finger stimulation and she did have a few contractions while I was doing it, but nothing very strong. I have also tried running her around but this also did not have an immediate effect this time..Reluctant to phone the vet as he just spent all night helping me......

They need to do another x ray to chk. Take her in to the vet. That's what they are there for.
Good luck!

no problem giving her more oxy, effects are usually wore off half an hour after its injected, just dont overdose it (ie.correct dosage for weight, less is better)because that can actually slow down the contractions.you should be able to feel if she has any more pups by gently pressing her stomach.when my last bitch was whelping, had to give her a shot for every pup after her fifth and she had 12.get the puppies suckling if you can, that will help with the hormones.ALL THE BEST!

Nothing to add really, just KUDOS to you for seeking help from a vet when you know you needed it. And congrats on the puppies!
