my female has tons of drive will play tug all day long loves her ball on a rope and is good in ob but refuzes to show her drive if she is on a leash. if i take it off she will play all day long with the leather tug even just a rope with no ball. but the moment the leash goes on its total ignoreing of the item. i tryed a harness that i had and she was slightly more interested i need to get a better harness tho i just didnt know if anyone had any suggestions. its the strangest thing lol please tell me what i am doing wrong. no bashing just constructive critisism plz

Did you correct her? Did she correct herself?

how is your female obediance? because sometimes you do too much of that on leash.
if your going to do schz, maybe leave it to the helper/decoy. tie her to a post and just let your girl do the rest.
youll be suprise how much a helper can bring out of a dog.
for yourself. maybe keep her on a tab. its like a leash but 12 inches. that would help too.
then maybe move to a 4 foot after. and just move up leash sizes.
that might work hopefully that helps

she is decent in ob we just started she even before we did the focus work i always praised her when she was a pup for looking at me when we where walking together. btw she is 2 and we are just starting schh work i raised her for sar work relly. and yea our helper tryed to get her going with me holding her on a leash and she was avoiding him. he talked about tieing her and letting her watch all the other dogs work and getting her frusterated.

Why is she avoiding the helper?
by kaoboy on 05 May 2011 - 23:05
the helper is smart. we did that for barking in prey. and once barked gets a quick nice bite. and that dog goes off the field.
its a great excercise.
i think she is avoiding the helper due to maybe not sure, or not too cofident with other people.
you gotta remember its a new place for her, new people and your asking alot from her.
try the other dogs excercise. and maybe even before training or after. just you and your female play on the field off leash. let her roam around smell and everything else.
give it time. i have no doubt she'll adapt to the situation.
my puppy wants to go training all day. if i decide to be lazy. hell drive me nuts.. sometimes i just want to boot him.
but once we play for abit. hell calm down. all it takes is 30 min of throwing the ball. and bam hell lay down in the house. and just stare at me hah
cute cute
good luck.

yea we have no idea on her reasoning behind avoiding the helper shes not being defencive her tail is at rest no hackleing or such she just turns her butt to him. but this confused me because at home off leash she will chase the flirt pole off leash. i tried to backtie her the other day and she wouldent even look at it.
this training day im going to get there early and just let her out walk around get use to the field and then try again
lol if you ever met her it think you would say she is overly confident with strangers. i kinda fubared in raiseing her and socalised the heck out of her before i knew and wanted to do SchH and she will willinly run up to a stranger if they make friendly motions. now dont get me wrong i had a guy walk past me on the opposite side of the street and then he ran at me she got inbetween me and said person tail went up and she barked a few times and then watched him the rest of the way. so shes still a shepherd :p glad she grew out of the happy pee on peoples shoes tho.
Ty for all of the comments i will talk with the helper about them on our training day and let you know how things turned out.

Nothing wrong with her being confident around people. A scared dog will only protect itself.

by Siantha on 07 May 2011 - 01:05
yep nope i am very happy about that. i perfer to beable to totaly trust my dog with children and adults i can take her with me anywhere and not worry about her temperment.
