My GSD really loses her appetite after her heat cycle. She goes from a full bowl to just a partial bowl. She is very energetic, so i knwo she is not sick. What do people experience with their dogs??

My girls ALL stop eating right before their heat cycles (watching their girlish figures!), then they blow their coats (change into their party dresses), then they get very clingy during their heat (looking for love), then when their cycles are almost over they get irritable (pms = post menses syndrome)!! We've lived with these ladies, & their moods, so long now we know their rhythms by heart, (the rhythm is gonna getcha!) Which, aside from being silly, is a good thing; 'cause we know when something's not right with any one of them!

My bitch did this for her last 4 or 5 seasons and it would last for about 3 weeks. My vet said it was hormonal and that she was having a pseudo pregnancy which I concurred with. She would be picky with her food, but like your dog, full of life.
It won't happen anymore though, as a month ago she developed Pyometra and had an emergency operation at Liverpool Small Animal Teaching Hospital.
If you don't intend breeding from your dog, I suggest you get her spayed. The only reason my bitch remained unspayed was because she had an adverse reaction to anaesthetic when she went in to be spayed in 2006, hence the Pyo being dealt with at Liverpool and not at my own vets.
I personally think these pseudo pregnancies are a precursor to Pyometra....
