Hi Everyone,
Since acquiring my new search dog (puppy) partner, I have been considering joining a local SchH club.
I may want to put a BH and perhaps a SchH1 title on him (in addition to the SAR training).
Here in ABQ, NM we have three local clubs (within 60 miles) to chose from.
I have inquired about information (dues and requirements) from two.
The third club, located in Los Alamos, has a nice informative web site and lists all of the dues and membership requirements.
However, their annual dues almost gave me a heart attack.
Dues for a new member are $350 and renewing dues are $200.
In addition, you must belong to one of the national clubs like USCA (which I don't have a problem with) whose annual dues a re $100 (way more reasonable).
So my question is, what is the norm for local club dues in your area??
Thanks for your input,
C

We have a $100 prospective member fee, then it is $225 per year for a single membership. We are a USCA club so membership there is also required.

I had membership in the GSDCA-WDA, and all the clubs were full and not taking members.
So I found a club I could join, but they told me I had to be in the USA, and couldn't be a member in both, so I dropped out of WDA,
and joined USA, I'm just happy to find a club that would except some new members, I don't know many details yet, but they were willing to let me do some free training in the beginning.
I would pay what you mentioned cause I don't own any of the equipment, and I need to train with experienced people that have achieved ScH titles on their dogs.

I pay less than that, but our club is very new and starting up. If the club is good with good helpers and you like the people then i would pay that.
Also i don't know the situation in your neck of the woods but most SAR do not like Schutzhund dogs.
You may want to keep it on the downlow that you are training for Sch.

Hi Everyone,
Thank You for your replies.
It's not that I wouldn't pay the membership dues if that's what they are...... that's what they are....I was just shocked.....and don't understand why they are so high.
I also view working/training with experienced people as a great opportunity......but those people need to have some serious experience.....an example would be someone like Kevin Sheldahl who is local.
I've trained and shown horses all of my life and have never paid dues as expensive as that for any of the horse clubs or organizations.......I guess I thought dogs wouldn't be as expensive to campaign......should have done my research :(
I did read on the website that your membership application is reviewed and you have to be accepted.....which sounds reasonable.
The equipment prices don't bother me as much.......I look at buying equipment as an investment......plus I'm a girl and what girl can resist shopping :)

Club insurance runs around $1200 a year, most clubs put on a trial yearly.... Fly in judge, pay his/her expenses and lodging, purchase trophies for competitors.... And generally do not make enough in entry fees to cover all of that.
Then some clubs pay rent on fields, electricity and plumbing if lucky, and THEN sleeves, tugs, blinds, etc.
I think my club is around $200 first year and $150 after that. I have paid more than that at a previous club.
$350/250 does not sound like that much depending on what the club is like.

I do not feel that is high at all for what you get... Our club has a 1 time joining fee of $100 and then dues are $300 per year. The club then pays for the liability insurance, expenses to put on trials, all expenses for the field maintanence and all equipment needed to train. about $300 per year is normal in the North East.

There is an entire range of dues in USA clubs across the country. That range is from $100 per year (the lowest I have ever heard of!!) to $1,000 a year (the highest). Most fall within a $250-500 range for training and that may cover two dogs. Most charge an additional rate for more dogs and offer "family memberships" to soften the blow. Many require membership in one or another.
