Hello,
my name is Callie. I've been watching the threads here for a while and decided to register. I own a border collie that I compete in agility, obedience, and flyball with. She's also bitten the sleeve before, lol. I foster German Shepherds for my local rescue and assist at my local schutzhund club.
There is something I need help with... there is a shepherd that I am working with, owned by an aquaintance I guess you could say, that I am confused about. He shows a ton of potential for some line of work. He has a ton of toy drive, and listens very well. He's not intimidated by much, and doesn't see everything that moves as a theat. It seems like he has good sense. He's only a year old and I'd love to see how he'd do in a sport of some sort, hopefully schutzhund. However his owner says she doesn't have time for that, but said I'd be welcome to work with him.
Is this a good idea though? Do people often work other people's dogs? And do they respond the same way with the owner afterwards usually?
Thank you

hi, welcome..
kk for some people on this forum some will say yes and some will say no.
people do send there dogs off to a trainer to get it ready for trail.
but in my expereince. are u going to get a title? are u going to do it?
or your freind?
i think a dog should be trained and love by the owner. if your going to train the dog good.
but titleing it is a different story i think!!!
for me. i wouldn't let someone train my dog unless i was there.
i've seen trainers use negative methods, that i dont beleive.. unless my dog was a nut case for sure use it.
but i pick my dogs for not having a nerve issue

I don't see why not. You want to train it and the owner doesn't have the time. As Charlie Sheen would say, the dog comes out "Winning". You have the time and desire to do it and the dog probably needs something done with it. Dogs are smart and will know what is expected while he is with you vs your "aqaintance". When you are finished with the dog, he has a nice home to live out the rest of his life while you have the opportunity to go get your own dog.
