A friend is looking to get a puppy in 1-2 years .  She wants it to be from good working lines to do Schutzhund with.  However, most of the breeders she's looked at require the puppy be returned if there is a health issue (i.e. hip or elbow dysplasia) before a replacement is given.  She will not give up her dog to get a replacement and is hoping to find a breeder that doesn't require that.  She'll be fixing the puppy around 18-24 months but will do prelims first to make sure the joints are sound enough for sport.  Health and temperament are her biggest concerns.  She'd prefer a solid black but that's not an absolute requirement.  Anyone able to recommend a breeder that doesn't require that?  Obviously they'd need to have stock with at least hip and elbow clearances and cover hips and elbows in the contract.  Feel free to send private messages with anyone she should stay away from but please don't post here.  Not looking for a war, just a place for her to start looking.

You will find that most breeders include that provision in their contracts. Without it they could be slammed by every grifter trying to get an additional dog free. The fact is that the vast majority are have a vested interest in their pup having a good and loving home. Many,if not most, often waive the return provision on a case -by-case basis. I doubt you will find one who dispenser with it in the contract. Have your friend do a Google search. That will turn up several of the breeders to be avoided.

I only have showlines so not what she wants.  But I agree with PP.  Most breeders will not replace without a return of the original because too many buyers take advantage of that.  My contract is one of the best that I've seen for buyers and I offer either replacement with a return of the original dog, or they can keep the dog, spay/neuter it and I'll give them 1/2 of that dog's purchase price as a credit towards the purchase of a replacement dog.  I find that keeps people from trying to scam me, and on a case-by-case basis I might change that but I'd never put it in my contract just due to the potential for scamming.

Hello, Please take a look at this breeder. I was looking for similiar GSD. When all hope was lost I ran across this website. It was exactly what I was looking for. Ended up getting 2 pups. They are above and beyond my wildest expectations. The Breeder is one of the most knowledgable people I have ever met on the breed. Will work with you all the way. Please, take a minute and check out this sight.

Danbee, a contract like yours would be fine to her.  She won't mind a partial refund being applied towards another puppy.  She just doesn't want a contract that only allows any type of guarantee to be honored if the dog is returned.  It doesn't matter what goes wrong with her dog.  She'll still keep it and do whatever it takes for it to have a comfortable life but she'd want to get another one to try again for sport.  Altering to receive a replacement is also not an issue as she'll be fixing the dog no matter what.  She doesn't care for the hassles of intact dogs and has no desire to raise an entire litter of puppies.

To the people sending ads for puppies available now or soon, please note she does not want a dog for 1-2 years.  She's currently finishing college and doesn't have time to properly work a puppy right now.  She's just researching breeders right now so she can find one she likes enough to get on their waiting list.  She doesn't want a dog to co-own while you retain stud rights because she doesn't want an intact dog.  Nor does she want an older dog that someone else has already started training.  She really wants an 8-10 week old puppy that she can train from the beginning.

I would also agree that Jenni  (vom Eisenherz) be a breeder you should look into.
There are several really good knowledgeable dog people/breeders on this forum, that specialize in the WLs.
AlpineK9, Eichenluft, JustK9s, Silbersee, Gildafk9, and there are even more that I would recommend...but I'm having a moment of "some-timers", and can't remember everyone's name off the top of my head.... frown

Isachev is correct. Maybe I'm a fool, but my contract only asks for papers back on a dog who is defective in any way. I will take the dog back if they don't want to keep it, but they don't have to. Why would I even want to sell a dog to someone who is ok with giving back their dog???

The only issue I have with what your friend is looking for is that I am super against spaying and neutering because I am a health Nazi (only for the dogs...I eat like crap). Neutering or spaying before 24 mos. will void my entire guarantee. I prefer to put them in homes where they will be left intact and managed appropriately as opposed to altered.

I would recommend J-dub (jenni78), but you gotta pass a polygraph and.background check.

most breeders really do not want the dog back, they just do not want to be scammed.

Honestly, what are they going to do with a dysplastic or nervy dog.

Tell your friend to discuss these issues with the breeder and what they require if the dog fails health/character issues.

I think you will find a lot about the breeder you have chosen by the answers they give.

Chaz, that was the old contract. Since the recent debacles regarding dog sales on this board, I have amended my contract to make it more stringent. Any reasonably good home should still be able to get through the regime in about 18 months-24 months if they study hard and are clean.
