Good Morning everyone.

I am concerned about this new puppy who is 11 weeks old going up and don the stairs outside. She goes out my door on to the deck and then down to the yard to potty. Now i can carry her now but another cpl weeks she is going to be to heavy to carry.

What is the conscences in regards to it wrecking there hips? There is people who say it wont hurt them and then others who say it will.I guess it is just weeding out what is right and what is wrong and what a better place to ask about a gsd pup but to a gsd board:)

My other two never had to deal with stairs.I just want to be sure i am not contributing to HD.

Thanks

It wouldn't concern me in the least unless there is a reason why you think this pup might not handle it well. Did you purposely buy a pup that might have problems in this regard? A GSD should not have any issue with this stuff but the way people are breeding dogs......

My point is if the pup is predisposed to someething like stairs causing a problem (which it should not be) then it may.

I wouldn't think it would be different, but our Golden has does stairs just fine for the last 11 years. When we first got her she was afraid of them - just a pup :) - but she goes up and dowqn them like a pro, and aside from being a bit rickety from age, she is in great health and her hips are fine.

IMO it shouldnt be a problem, unless the pup is determined to be overweight by a vet

If you're feeling uncomfy about the puppy going up and down the stairs and feel that it may affect or hurt them, you can use something like a ramp over the stairs

Part of the puppy contract we signed said we weren't suppose to let our pup go up and down stairs. I carried her up and down the stairs from the deck until she was 3 months old. Then I said what the hell??? If these dogs are bred so badly they can't go up and down stairs something needs to be changed in the way breeders do things. If they were born out in the wild would the mom carry them every where except on level ground??

OMG that is Absurd.

If the dogs they breed have an OFA or A-stamp rating of excellent or good on their hips and elbows, and they research several generations in each pedigree for hip and other problems (which are hereditary) before breeding them they should have nothing to worry about.

That part of the contract sounds fishy. Are you supposed to carry your dog everywhere, and god forbid they used the stairs, does that make the contract void and null?   What if you want to use the puppy as a working dog? How is it possible to avoid stairs? If a breeder showed me that in a contract he would have got some unprofessional words from me, and I wouldn't get a puppy there.  Just saying... :)

I've actually seen the stairs claus on several contracts I looked at. Seems a little corny to me too. The stud dog of my pup has "excellent" hips and the mom has "good" hips. Both have normal elbows so I felt just fine getting the pup from them. Plus they were recommended by a friend as having very good dogs.

Thanks for all the replies.

I figured as much that she would be fine. Her pedigree is all ofa good hips so i didn't forsee a problem just wanted to make sure i wasn't contributing to something i could prevent per say..

Would you see a problem with a puppy playing fetch running up and down a hill on a field? I put a couple of videos on youtube (for those intrested search for "Lola playing fetch" and i got quite a few negative comments regarding there hips, and i shud keep her on flat ground!
