I came across an add stating that the sire is a "very hard, almost uncontrollable", "nasty" dog with "insane pray drive" and it is "almost impossible to make him 'out'".  He is expected to produce “tough, hard and nasty” puppies.

Are those good GSD temperament characteristics that we should look for?

Insane "pray drive" eh?

Yes, I'd say this is a good characteristic in that it ensures this dog will go to heaven.

In all seriousness, sounds like a dog who is probably just out of control and is quite average in knowledgeable hands. Usually the people who brag about dogs in those terms don't know what the hell they're doing/looking at.

I've been looking for a plain "nasty" dog for a while now. Never found one.

hard PLUS insane prey drive sounds like MY WORST nightmare of a gsd i had a dog like that once god id die if i got a dog like that again lol

dog i would like or think is perfect is 50/50 prey defense very strong nerves and very civil medium energy medium drive and i like a bit of handler soft but not OVerfly soft just moderate soft. I am avery soft person.

i use to want high defense drive until i saw a dog with higher defense seem like a mess so now i balance seems nice

I forgot to mention the "explosive attitude". I have never met a dog with this characteristic so I don't even know what it means...

lol are we allowed to see the add or is that agiasnt rules?

You're post cracked me up Jenn, When I read the add my thought was probably just a pretty good dog owned by someone that couldn't handle a cocker spaniel. Usually those kinda dogs don't show up unless the dog knows you are afraid of them. Then I read your post and cracked up.

A hard dog with high prey drive is a very good thing as long as the dog is very trainable and controlable at the same time,a dog with balance with many good working triats are the best, the breed suffers from lack of hardnest with many shepards produced theses days that show lack of hardness, it is much easier to find a soft wimpy dog than it is to find a dog that has enough hardness ( toughness). A good german shepard should be brave-hard-confident at the same time loving affectionate controlable.

Well said Bundishep, agree a 100%

Destiny4you,

I don't really want to shame anybody or make them a personal subject of the conversation. I am just wondering if those advertised traits are positive in GSD or they are simply missing it a bit. I am aware that some sport people like 'tough’ dogs with ‘insane pray drive'.   But I am not sure that adding 'nasty', 'almost uncontrollable' and ‘explosive attitude’ is good combined with ‘tough’ and ‘insane pray drive’…

Jenni78,

I agree with you that probably that is not really true representation of this dog. But if this was a right description this dog would be pretty scary to me personally and a great liability. Like a loaded gun … What use would I have of the ‘nasty’ dog that I don’t have control over and can hardly recall? What use do I have of a dog that has ‘explosive attitude’ (unless I am misunderstanding the meaning of the description).

I would not want to be around the person with the ‘explosive attitude’, less male GSD when he ‘explodes’… And then when this happens, you can hardly control’ his ‘nastiness’ nor have ability to recall them in 100%? Looks like a accident waiting to happen to me...

This is what is wrong with many breeders of "tough" GSDs and other narrow field breeders. This type of "stuff" gives GSD bad name and it will potentially ruin it's reputation just like it ruined Pitt bull's reputation. Here are the characteristics of GSD valued by the original breeders and creators of these dogs and people who have wellfare of the breed on their heart.

GSD must be perpetuated as a working dog who is versatile and physically fit to perform well any task at hand for which it could be trained. These tasks are many.

Each individual and each well bred GSD should perform well on any "training path" you take it. Breeding GSD for any specific characteristic only, I do not care how important and omitting the others and also breeding GSD for extreme drives of any kind, is equal to ruining of the breed.

GSD is not an extreme dog. GSD is balanced and  versatile working dog.
