My 6 month old pup doesnt eat his food straight away,in fact sometimes he leaves it several hours.I went to my vet and she said give him more food as he is slightly underweight.I feed him a dry diet,Royal canin Junior.Does he need meat or chicken in with this.I dont want to change the diet completley as i know GSD can have delicate stomachs......

Take the food up after 15 minutes whether he has eaten or not. If the all-day buffet is closed they soon learn to eat when the food is put out. What is the age and weight of your pup? GSD's should be lean, not all vets are as familiar with this preference.

I had the same problem. I mixed in just a liitle wet food with warm water. I did take the food away after about an hour. She is now 17months and a very lean solid 76 pounds.  She is now on a steady schedule and knows when it's dinner time. I feed her Tast Of The Wild with a little Trader Joes wet food. She loves it.

boil a little chicken and cut into small pieces, save broth.  Dump a little warm chicken and broth over the kibble.  that should do the trick

63lbs at 6 months seems like he's a nice size. Maybe you can post a picture

hi,

i had that problem with my husky.
never with my shepherds.
but i feed orijen fish adult. hes about 7 months now and weighs 70lbs.

i feed once he goes pee in the morning, kinda acts like a reward for not peeing in the house.
then after he eats he goes poo...

i leave the food out for 4 minutes. the little yorkie and the gsd both eat there food once its on the ground.

try the orijen fish. its grain free.. its good..

wet food i think its bad for the stool and causes bad breath, leads to bad teeth down the road.
if he doesnt eat, hell learn.

hope this helps.

o-yeh for my husky, i did what i explain at the top and after couple days he gave in and ate all his food.

I would soften food some and ad some thawed raw chicken. May still be teething a bit. Sore gums. Sounds like weight is o.k. Wish I had a bit of this problem. I go near food and the pack is drooling. Good Luck

Have a stool sample checked for the normal stuff as well as coccidia and giardia. Some of these will make them feel nausious or just not feel like eating. Sometimes you have to ask to have coccidia and giardia checked and some vets send these out to a lab.

What most of them said... VERY important part being to limit meal time to 15-20 minutes.  Teaches them to eat  when food is presented. Instead of canned food we boil some chicken thighs, rice, and vegies (beans, carrots and sometimes peas). A serving spoon full of that over the dry food and some warm water to wake up the smell of the chow and everyone here eats like porkers.   Feeding 6 dogs takes a total of 5 minutes from turning on the tap to warm the water, to picking up the dishes.  and there's never a nugget left.
