How does the black gene appear in a breeding of two sables or a sable to Bi Color or any other combination of colors other than black? (Gene Combinations)

How far back can the black gene lurk? (Assuming no black dogs in the first and second generations)

If you breed black to black and have many black dogs scattered in both pedigrees does it strengthen the gene?

a recessive color can be carried for many generations before the right combination is made and one pops up in a litter.  and just because a recessive color does not show up on your dogs pedigree does not mean any of the dogs listed siblings weren't a recessive color.

and what do you mean by does it strengthen the genes if found in a pedigree?
does it improve pigment? not necessarily.
does having black dogs in a pedigree improve odds of producing black pups? maybe, depends on if the parents are black recessive

here's an example: had a very dark female produce white pups.  in 5-6 gens. there were no whites or breeding for whites in her pedigree.  but the recessive gene for whites had been carried down thru the generations until I happened to have bred her to a white recessive male, and 1/2 the litter was white.

used this example because white is a recessive color (or masking gene) and operates like black.

Interesting on the whites Uber Land! I thought most of that was long gone. Mind sharing what lines? It's OK if not.... just find it interesting!
