Since longevity is important to all of us; where do we go from here? More health testing, or ??

Part of the reason I chose my male is the longevity on both sides... both Grandsires lived to be 13+ and produced dogs who are headed the same direction. Ufo Von Guys Hof and Xito Von Maineche. I'd steer clear of lines who tend to pass at 8 or younger, especially if no reason was given.

Surely health testing is a very good start, but to really be successful in improving the health of the breed, mandatory health testing would be necessary for ALL registered GSDs and that will never happen. Even though the parents and grandparents may pass all the health tests that is no guarantee. The Germans have required hip screenings for decades and still produce dogs with bad hips. If the data is not available regarding ALL the aunts and uncles, great aunts and uncles, siblings, etc. then when selecting a breeding pair it is still somewhat of a guessing game. All need to be considered. So I guess the best a breeder can do is look at the available information regarding the longevity and health of the dogs being considered for breeding and hope for the best. Then of course, there are those who do no health testing at all, the unethical breeders that knowingly breed dogs with health issues and genetic faults and those that breed for he extreme in structure. YIKES!!!!!

Congo Vikar, Cordon An-Sat, Balli Panta Rei & all lived past 12-14 years, plus still produced offspring into old age. Orry is almost 11 years old & still siring litters in perfect health also.
There is a local breeder near me her line of dogs all live to be 13-14 years old also. The lines were based on show lines mixed with old Czech / WL lines. They have traditional straight top line & larger size.
I'll have to ask her for names of the dogs in her dogs pedigree. Her male is siring litters at 13 years old.
I owned a female line bred off of Lord who lived to be almost 15 years old. Her offspring all lived to at least 14 years old also.
Take care, Carol
