A personal protection dogs job in part, is to allow you the opportunity to remove yourself from harm.
Having said that, you should feel comfortable being able to engage an assailant in close quarters with your dog.
This video will demonstrate how important it is to watch your dog during training.

It is easy to say “watch your dog”, it’s another thing to actually do it.

#1 ......you do NOT fight with your dog in a PP situation. Police dog maybe but PP not unless there is no other option. You get the heck out of dodge. As I have said before you guys are gonna get someone hurt or killed one day.
#2......You are not going to look at your dog in that situation if it's for real. Why would you?
#3......If that dog is at the point in training for an exercise like that then it should be done in a muzzle and then you won't have to worry about watching your dog.

I pointed out that; A personal protection dogs job in part, is to allow you the opportunity to remove yourself from harm.
Which equals in your words – Get out heck out of Dodge
I also pointed out that; having said that, you should feel comfortable being able to engage an assailant in close quarters with your dog.
You said - You are not going to look at your dog in that situation if it's for real. Why would you?
I pointed out that it is important to watch your dog, this is a training scenario for PPD or PSD’s.
As discussed with you on another forum, it is important to work your dog in a muzzle as well as a hidden sleeve and prepare yourself and your dog for any scenario.
I know I must sound like a broken record, speaking to someone of your worldly experience in the field of dog training, so in order to silence me…..please post some of your videos!
A real video, not one taken off the internet. Please post one of your videos for the world to see.
Thank you

In real life - not training:
1. My PP dog and I are a team, I would never send him and run. (unless there was no other choice)
2. I would be aware of the dog and attacker at all times and anything or anyone else nearby.
I probably would not have jumped in the fight like they did in the demo.
(maybe kicked him a few times)
3. In the final stages of training, proofing is done without a muzzle.
And I agree with the title - watch your dog during training.

wow.. i love how people like to talk about what they would do when they have no idea what it feels like to actually do it for real.. ! It sucks!!! You are about to shit your pants and then your partner is about to get killed by a knife.. trust me unless you dont care about your dog... you are right there fighting with him.
I still cant believe I ever did such a job.. idiot!

Even I , little ole me, suburban girl, have buyers whose names I can't reveal, let alone post their pics, due to their gov't/military affiliation, and friends who are a big enough deal in the gov't world (not this country) of REAL LIFE dog training/military training/handling. And guess what? They don't use their real names on forums, and would never, ever, as long as they live, post a freaking video of how they train on the internet. These are people whose names I only learned the truth about myself when I met them in person.
So, the way I see it, those who can and have to do it for real, do it and shut up about it because it has to be that way, and those who are wannabe imposters make videos about their cowboys and indians games, because they have that luxury....because no one is serioiusly depending on those dogs...thank God.
Just my observation over the past decade.
