A lot of people are always insulting showlines but have u ever checked the eurosport site? lots of civil showlines being sold for family protection.
Also Alpine k9 had a very good showline for military/police work
these are reputable places that wont just label a dog for portection if it is a dud
Just like working dogs there are crappy showlines out there and really good ones

Yes there are very few showlines out there even the freak of nature type of good SL dogs.
But the question should be what are your chances of getting one of those good dogs. Let me tell you there are some real crappers out of both types WL and SL.
So yes they are out there however very hard to come by.
And even so called reputable dog people will pass off a dud dog/pup, or if you will misrepresent the dog for what it is.
My main beef with SL is that they could have two dogs.
Dog one decent worker but not proper dementions for the ring
Dog two great dementions crappy worker. Dog number two gets breed.
Now if this is repeated generation after generation, how many of these will be good workers.
The ansewr is very few.
I have seen 1 in particilar that SL that would put 99 percent of WL to shame. To my knowledge he could never reproduce himself in his puppies.
Your chances of getting this tpype in any strain of GSd is nill to none. Point being he was a genetic freak.
Yes there are good ones out thereI doubt your chasnces would be good. However you may find one that you are happy with.

Just because you haven't taken the time to research and see whare working ability comes from in the West German conformation lines, doesn't mean it dosen't exist and it doesn't mean it can't reproduce either.

I must admit that
i have never researched SL bloodlines. These are my obervations from what I have personally seen from SL.
I personally dont like the selection process for what gets breed.
But if the next person likes it, fine with me!

This is a good topic for me to learn from, what do you consider a show line? AKC/CKC Dog Show?
Our dog Jessi is titled (ZVV1) we are currently training her in Personal Protection as opposed to Sport.
In her first CKC Dog Show (Tradex, Canada’s largest) she placed over the current top winning Bitch in Canada.
www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html
The judge was from Ireland and commented to the participants that a German Shepherd should not only
portray the physical characteristics of the breed, but should also be capable of being titled in one of the many venues meant for the breed (Schutzhund/Herding/Police/ etc.)
Is this what we are talking about when you refer to Show Line GSD’s ?
thanks
Kim

Kim,
She is a showline dog. Very nice dog and I'm glad she works well for you. Her pedigree is all SL dogs.

Thanks Jim - I'm trying to figure out what everyone is calling/referring to as Show Lines & Working Lines and why?
Can a SL not be a working dog and WD not be a show line at the same time?
If that makes sense, I'm really curious about this and just looking for professional ideas/advice/experience. I'm lost in this debate
Thanks

S/L as used here almost always refers to German s/l.
Most will say Am. s/l when referring to them, which is really not often.

Can you advise or explain- Can a SL not be a working dog and WD not be a show line at the same time?
Not being argumentative, is the breed in yours/everyones experience gone to being separated in to two different categories? SL -vs- WL ?
I'm not in to show dogs, my wife is showing Jessi and I have wanted to ask these questions for some time but had to wait for this thread, to jump in and ask.
In my ordinary mind a dog is a dog, can or should a GSD be expected to perform the work it was initially bred for and still be an acceptable SL
Thanks

Kim,
I'm only responding because it is you.
When speaking of Show lines people are referring to the dog's pedigree, just as when referring to a Working LIne dog they are referring to a Working Line pedigree.
Can a SL not be a working dog and WD not be a show line at the same time?
There are some S/L dogs that work well just as there are W/L dogs with excellent structure and working ability. Because a S/L dog works doesn't make it a working line dog. Just as a W/L dog that V's in the BSZS is not a S/L dog or a "show" dog.
