Is this dog working the way you expected him to when you got him? Thinking back on our conversations about him, I was surprised to see the video, to be honest. He's strong, obviously, but I guess I was surprised at the strenth of his desire for the sleeve. Based on what you had said, I had expected him to be more focused on the man and less so on the sleeve, but he's having to be nearly choked off the sleeve. My other question is: Is this the dog's natural inclination, OR is this a result of your training and thus he's taking all his aggression/frustration out on the sleeve because he's learned that's all he's allowed?
Hope that makes sense.

It's all about balance. A dog to heavily on the man is not a suitable dog for the sport. I love his desire to want to hang on to the sleeve longer. Then once he outs the sleeve go back to active barking at the man.
Take the sleeve totally out of the equation and he has no problem wanting or showing an active desire to bite and persue a man. So for me it's very important that the dog hangs on to the sleeve after the decoy slips it in the form of either carrying it or holding it calmly.
So to answer your question, it's somewhat made in the training, but for sure its a needed piece to balance the dog. An overly defensive dog will not stand the pressure of a schIII routine. That being said he's already eaten (literally fucked up) several people..... The last thing I need is to have this behavior continue on the field... Balance, balance, balance.
Defense or aggression is not our issue. Hope this answers your question Jen.
