I have read the Showline vs Workingline threads on here. The topic was what do people think about crossing workingline with showline. So that made me start thinking about crossing other lines. Such as Czech with WG workingline..... belgian with Slovak etc.

So how do you all feel about crossing other lines when breeding? I am not talking about West German Showline/workingline as that has been beat to death here...lol.  Do you think it is a good idea to cross lines? As this can bring in new blood so to speak and also strenghten genes. Or do you think that the lines should stay "pure" so to speak. Meaning just breed workingline with workingline.... Czech with Czech...Slovak with Slovak...DDR with DDR...etc.

I think it's a good idea to cross, but also a good idea to preserve each line's integrity for future crossing.  That's providing that they have something worthy to offer that the other genepool is lacking in some way, and haven't completely transformed from the spirit of their original purpose that set them apart from the rest (as ddr have).

from what i have seen and had, czech & ddr work well together; west ger & belgian work well together.  they have some common ancestry further back and produce more uniformity.  results are more predictable.

We have always crossed DDR with West Working with an awesome outcome, but we will also be breeding DDR to DDR hopefully this year. For us we will continue to cross DDR with West Working, but also breed DDR to DDR to maintain the  Full DDR lines as well.

Always a good idea to outcross.  Then do a close breeding after to pick out traits good or bad.  just look at what happened to Mary Rogers when she imported Dexter from holland!  Dobes became solid again, color was amazing and the temperments... Wow.

damned , I have to totally agree with daryll

by duke1965 on 26 February 2011 - 19:02

but seriously , to be able to cross , you need to have (and keep)separate lines
it depends on what your goal is , what to bring together , if you want sport/points dogs with sharpness , ive seen some very nice dogs from czech blood bred over tom leefdaalhof , but its important where to go from there , and also to mix czech with tom , you need to have and keep pure czech and tom lines

my dog is a mix between belguim and czech has tom in the pedigree

dont people mix belgum into czech to improve trinablity and bidability while with czech they get good agression clear heads more real serious dogs? just something someone told me

I do agree with Daryl. I think it is good to cross lines as this can bring in new blood. They are alot of dogs that are heavily line bred. Not saying this is a bad thing, as this can really capitalize on the good traits...but can also really bring out the bad ones if not careful.
I also feel that it is good to keep the lines pure also. That way we are still able to do the out crosses. The dogs that I have now are all outcrosses. I have a male showline(old style) that has some DDR. I also have 2 Czech females that have some west workingline.

There seems to be some knowledge on this thread. On that topic, is this too heavily line bred?
