the first few weeks off a plane from over seas what have been your experiences?
by danny killeen on 23 February 2011 - 20:02
I can tell you that they DO NOT act like a dog you have raised from a pup.
They will eventually, but imagine this...
One day, someone you know, love and trust, takes you for a drive. They put you on a plane...you don't know why.
Several strangers check you out, speak in foreign tongues, load you off the plane in a new land, several hours later, and then you get collected by a stranger.
The stranger, whilst kind, cannot speak your language, offers you strange food and takes you from all you know.
How would YOU act?

They drive on the left side of the road.
I guess it depends how old they are and what they have learned.
Also the experiences they have had - socialization - were they kennel dogs, etc...

I imported a 22 month old male GSD a while ago. He was not in a rush to get out of the crate at all, he was quiet, aloof, didn't eat much, didn't want to play. He seemed genuinly depressed. This all lasted for about a month.
After we both got used to eachother, he was the happiest dog alive. He lived to please me, and he turned out to be the best dog I have ever had till he recently passed.
So for the first three weeks or so there was no training, no commands, just spending time with him and doing fun stuff, going for car rides etc.
It also depends on the dog, I have heard some dogs come around quicker though.

Personal protection at my store, and a pet companion at home.

Then I guess my dog is the exception. She was sitting quietly, watching the other dogs flip out like lunatics in the Lufthansa waiting area when I met her. I quickly evaluated her and decided she'd be safe to let out to go to the bathroom. She walked out of her crate, did a couple "gee, I've beenin that crate a long time" hops and jumps, then she greeted me politely and we walked out to my car. She climbed in, sat down on the passenger seat and looked out the window the whole way home. We got a flat tire that had to be repaired, so she spent 2 hours in NTB's waiting area and was well behaved enough that children were approaching her for pets (which I declined) and the parents were shocked to find out I'd only had her a few hours. She was fine w/all my dogs she met when we finally got home that night.
She was slow to obey me, having a strong temperament and no reason to respect me yet, but she was anything but depressed, nervous, or shy. She knocked me on my butt the first morning I had her. Within about a week and a half-2 weeks, I'd say she did start obeying my commands, finally. It just took a little bit for me to earn her obedience/respect.
There is definitely a genetic component to how a dog handles stress.
