The owner was too busy to take care of them. He had ". . . hired a guy to look after them but apparently he took off on me." The dogs were found starving and emaciated; three dogs, including a puppy, were already dead when rescuers arrived. No heat, food, or water was available to these dogs. They had apparently been locked and abandoned up for weeks.

Two of the dogs are being treated at a vet hospital, the other five are at the AWSOM shelter in Stroudsburg, PA.

RE: AWSOM Action Alert 2/14/11

Stroudsburg, PA – The Animal Welfare Society of Monroe (AWSOM) is looking for assistance after responding to a report of abandoned dogs on Clarks Road, Paradise Township, Monroe County.

AWSOM’s involvement started when a neighbor discovered dogs roaming her property. Upon attempting to return them, she discovered a kennel of horrors, collected the animals and called for help. AWSOM Board Member Jeannie Lee and AWSOM Shelter Manager Mark Van Gasteren rescued 7 malnourished German Shepherds of various ages. Unfortunately it was too late for three dogs, including a weeks-old puppy, each of whom were found dead in filthy, isolated cages.

No heat, food or water was available to these animals. They appear to have been abandoned for weeks with no evidence of vehicle tracks in the snow.

Hope and Faith, the sickest of the German Shepherds, are still receiving round- the-clock care at East Stroudsburg Veterinary Hospital. Veterinarian Sammie Thompson is guarded but optimistic about their recovery. The other dogs are also receiving medical attention while slowly being re-acclimated to food and human contact. Their recovery is ongoing.

Property owner Pantellis “Pete” Zervas of Hazelton is under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police.
AWSOM is requesting assistance in the form of donations for medical expenses and potential adopters willing to provide these dogs with a loving home and a new life.

Donations can be mailed to AWSOM PO Box 13 Stroudsburg, PA 18360. www.AwsomAnimals.org

horrible.

I do rescue and would be happy to take one or more of these dogs if they need a place to go.

I don't know whether the shelter staff reads the PDB. You might want to contact them directly with your generous offer.

I figured you might do that, since you started the topic and seem interested in drumming up help for the dogs.

I will contact them with my generous offer.

I do not have room for another dog at this time, but will be making a donation from my next paycheck. My grandson & granddaughter called me to tell me about it in tears; it's very close to where their other grandmother lives, about 30 minutes north of me. Poor things, how can people just walk away from their animals.....?? jackie harris
