Hello!
I am asking this question for a friend. The breeder she has her heart set on doesn't allow shipping unless you pick up the pup.
Would a male German Shepherd fit into a medium original Sherpa bag? One that is 8 weeks old.

Thanks :)

Are you stating the breeders from where your friend would like to purchase a pup does not ship dogs from their kennel? But you or your friend is thinking of flying there and when flying back have the pup as "carry on" luggage?
I don't do this so I might not have the exact right response but check with the airline first, some as long as the crate can fit under the seat, you are good. Measure to see if pup could fit into a cat carrier.

See if you can buy the seat next to you and have a bigger carrier and have the dog there. I don't know why you or your friend just don't by a transport crate and have him down below? Then you already have a crate and you're with him from start of journey to destination? Are you worried about the puppy?

Hi GermanShepherd>3,
I had someone from California come to my house in Massachusetts to pick up his pup.
She fit in the Sherpa bag and was allowed to fly right with him, no problem as long as the pup is under 20 pounds, or there abouts, and fits in the Sherpa bag.
They had a very smooth trip going home, he did have a stop over which probably helped, the pup had a great experience!

Hi GermanShepherd>3,

I was able to take an gsd puppy with me in the cabin. Here's the soft crate I used.

A couple tips... Go United Economy Plus if you can...stowage under the seats is a bit larger than most. Plan ahead of time to go at an off peak time. This way you can easily get an entire row of seats to yourself. This way the puppy can be stowed under the seats for take off and landing but can be on the seat during the rest of the flight.

***On the seat in his crate. You're not allowed to take him out of the crate during the flight.

Hope this helps! Sonia

Aagh , I didn't know a Sherpa bag was  those screened/vented transport bag, cool. Always picked up the pup and the journey beck home started the bonding process.

just curious, for those of you who have done this successfully, what happened if the puppy needed to go to the bathroom during the flight? (espcially a long flight like east coast to west coast). Did they just go in the bag then you cleaned when it landed, or what?

I also have had no problems taking a puppy in the cabin.

Championl,

I lined the soft crate with the thicker pee pads just in case he had to go.
If they make a mess during the flight, I don't believe you can take them out to clean it.
You'll have to check on this.

Obi was fed early enough in the morning that he was able to go potty before my flight.
Also, before the flight, he was worked/played with enough that he just slept through it.

The duration of my flight was a bit over 2 hours.

Most airlines allow pets in the cabin as carry on luggage. I recommend reading the airline website to see what the restrictions and fees are. Some require pet  reservations.

A friend of mine takes disposable puppy potty pads with her when she brings a puppy home.

Another friend, who is an international flight attendant, has told me she has seen passengers take pups out of their carriers (during long  oversea flights) at the back of the plane to go potty on these pads. This is supposed to be a BIG NO NO, but I think it depends on the flight crew and how full the plane is.
