Hey everyone,
Just saying hi.  I found this forum while searching for information on how to train my new German Shepherd puppy.  My husband and I are currently deployed overseas, and we are looking forward to getting back, picking up Kendra, and settling in at home.

I do have a couple of questions.  We want Kendra to be well socialized, and we are going to try to get her training in personal protection. However, I'd like for her to be well versed in basic obedience before we start training in bite work.  I've noticed some deliberation on obedience vs protection.  Shouldnt she learn and be well behaved in at least the basics...sit, stay, lay, heel, before we start her on bite work?

German Shepherds are new for me, I've always had mutts of some sort or another, and I did have a german shep mix at one point in time.  He was very loyal, very protective, and extremely smart.  I had him sitting, laying down, and rolling over in a few days time, even to the point of just using hand signals.  I'm hoping Kendra will pick up on things as fast as Smokey did.

welcome. :)

OB is a must, the sooner the better...it does not mean you can't play tug with a rag to get started on bite work...I am sure you will get more responses shortly..

First thanks for all that you and your husband do to keep us safe here at home.

Obedience and socialization are important for a protection dog.  However, bite development for puppies is also important.  Playing tug, and teaching a good grip is important, as well as building their confidence and teaching them the basics of biting fuller and harder in resposne to a challenge.  Pups can also learn countering at a young age.  Leerburg has some great videos on raising a working puppy and on bite development in puppies.
