We have researched getting a Breeder Term Dog. This is a dog that we get from birth, but when she is about 2, the breeder would like to have bred with one of her studs. We would keep the dog until about a week before her due date and then the breeder would take her. The breeder would keep her until the puppies are weaned off of her, then she is ours to keep. We can visit her anytime we want through the birth process when she is at the breeders. All vet costs are covered by the breeder. This is a top breeder that we have researched and produces top quality shepherds. Some of which are purchased by the police. I would like to know if anyone can give me some feedback on this Breeder Term stuff. Again, we sign a contract when we get the dog, in the contract, the breeder as the right to take 2 litters and that is all. And the breeder cant do this after 4 years of age. Any feedback I can get on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for all the responses. Let me get a little more specific. First of all, the dog would be free. We would pay nothing for her. She is a pure bred GS. The health tests done by the breeder are Willebrands, Eye CERF and OFA Hip and elbows, cardiac, Patella and Temperment test. She comes with a written hip and health guarantee. I would be responsible for all vet care while she is living with me. The only time I wouldnt be is when she is breed and through the litter being born. Breeder covers all expenses during this time. This is my first time on this forum and its great to talk to other German Shepherd lovers like myself.

Do you have to pay full price (or anything) for her? What if her hips or health or temperament aren't good? Who pays her food and medical bills while she is with you?

You better ask around here privately about this because otherwise, you are likely to get burned. These kinds of deals are generally not good deals to make at all and all too often people like you get screwed and/or heartbroken.

The arrangements I have heard of that worked were where the breeder gives the dog to the people who agree to pay for food, the breeder pays all pregnancy-related expenses, but beyond that, often times expenses are split. Depending on how many litters the breeder wants out of her, once finished, she belongs to the foster family.
It's a good way for someone to get a free dog and let the breeder "borrow' her once or twice, if that's how it's set up. There are a million ways to do this and a million ways to screw it up. I'd be very careful and make sure you think of everything you can ahead of time so you're not stuck w/an argument because of a legitimate misunderstanding of the terms.

I know somebody that does this. It seems to work well for them and those that I know with the breeders dogs have been happy with the arrangement.

My main thought is that buyers should not be asked to pay full price and then also agree to this arrangement. If the bitch is free, or nearly free, then as long as the details are worked out, it can be a great arrangement for all involved.

Hi,
You said:

In my opinion a top quality breeder usually will not breed a dog without a schutzhund title, show rating, and breed survey.
There is also a chance of medical complications.
But that's just my opinion.
I guess it depends on what you want in a dog.

I personally have not done this but my last breeder does this. I would pay close attention to the details of the contract. Part of me is interested in the arrangement you just have to have facts, on paper. And if you have legal questions run it by a lawyer.
In my case the dog is 100% free, while at my location all costs are incured by me. The stud is already picked and the breeding process and all involved is covered by the kennel. The first litter goes to the kennel and she is mine from that point on again. FREE.
I want to say there is another scenario but I don't have the paperwork in front of me. (So don't quote me) but Everyting the same as above but when the litter is born you have the choice of one puppy free. The female goes back to the kennel.
Personally my thoughts are it's a win-win situation for both parties. Depending on what the lines are you could have the female and a breeder at that if that's what your looking for, for free. Yes it was a little work but you didn't have to pay ???? up front and you still got who you were looking for.

quality breeders do breed dogs untitled.!! Some breeders don't look at sport as a means to idenify a good dog. for breeding,. some quality breeders could give a rats a_ _ about a title.

Sable59,that just about says it all to me.MOST REPUTABLE BREEDERS DO LIKE TO TITLE THEIR DOGS IF THEY ARE INTO THE WORKING SIDE OF THE GSD BREED AND MOST OF US ON THE SHOW SIDE MAINLY USE MALES WHO ARE WINNING WELL IN THE SHOW RING,FEMALES ALSO BUT NOT TO THE SAME EXTENT .I DO KNOW THAT NEARLY ALL SHOW GSD BREEDERS ONLY USE HEALTH TESTED CLEAR DOGS IN THEIR BREEDING PROGRAMMES.DO YU?Sorry folks to go off topic.my view on breeding terms is DO YOUR HOMEWORK?Some ppl.are genuine and give a good deal,as this one seems to be to me,but there are some very unscrupulous ppl.out there.Carole Spelman RHEINMEISTER GSDS.
