I have read in most of my GSD books that deep chested dogs like the GSD should be fed in elevated bowls to reduce the chance of bloat.
I have read articles that go against feeding in elevated bowls because contrary to belief it can cause bloat.
What is your opinion on this? Do you use them or are against them? I would really like to see if majority of you use them, and if it is better to use them or lose them.
Have a great day everyone! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on this!

If you read the study done by Purdue University it states that elevated bowls can cause bloat. We have never used elevated bowls due to this and naturally a dog does not eat elevated.

I have read that one as well, but I also read in some dog books for diets and feeding, it was a side note that stated things against them.

The Purdue study on some issues related to bloat or gastric torsion, as reviewed in a seminar by a Tufts University Vet School professor is at :

It is certainly worth ready and re-reading. All owners of dogs potentially susceptible to this life-threatening condition should read this. The problem is that unfortunately there were only 11 large/giant breed dogs in the study. Elevating bowls has no basis in fact and may be problematic.

I used elevated feeders for my older dogs, 10+ yrs old, just seemed to be easier on the older dogs who started to slow down a little

I put Pharaoh's food in an elevated bowl. He takes the food out of the bowl and eats the raw chicken on a washable placemat.

1 yes 2 no. I have not had bloated trouble and have read info from both sides. My dogs do not gulp food and i really think that is where most of it comes from not the elevation of the food/water IMO
