I purchased a German Shepherd about one month ago.  He is 2 years old 28 inch height and the owner said he weighs 120 lbs.  I got him to help deter people from coming up to my house.  Instead he runs and hides from them.  How do I train him to stay in front of the house without making him to aggressive?   Thanks for any reply.

A dog running and hiding at 2 years old isn't good at all. I could be wrong, but something like this isn't really fixed by training. Did you see this dog before buying it?

One month is not long enough to bond with the dog (if you are even attempting to), spend some time with your dog in the front yard and maybe in several months time he may start to deter people.

Some dogs are stronger than others and may do what you want sooner. they are not machines with On & Off Switches.

The dog needs time to realize this is his new home, give it some time and let the dog relax.

pirates , do you really think time will fix that problem ,I think  if the dog was bought as a guardingdog , you bought a lemon

For any dog to protect its property they have to feel that this is their property...give him some time, make it fun for him to be out in the front, have some toys laying around, and eventually he will claim it as his place and than anyone who will come into his domain will be warned and stopped...
I say the first time he barks at someone praise him and give him treats, when someone who should come onto your property let him bark, praise him than give command "out", "bed"..what ever...I tell my dogs "relax" and they stop barking.  I have deck where they automatically retrieve and sit waiting till i bring visitor in front of them holding my hand up for them to remain on the deck while visitor is encouraged to ignore dogs...once dogs calm down i put my hand down and they come out,  pass by, sniff visitor...my boy usually sits next to me the whole time i am in a conversation my other two would inspect the vehicle...and then go off playing...or if they see that I am not comfortable or visitor gets antsy they will either walk around or stay behind the visitor looking at me...
It takes time...it takes encouragement and consistency...my dogs don't bark at every person walking by, they just lay there and watch....people who walk for exercise are never barked at..those who are walking and looking usually get growls and if they pause or slow down in front of my house they get greeted by cheery barks and snarling faces. :)

I'm sorry, but there is a difference between running and hiding to being indifferent.

Duke - based on the information or lack thereof I'm making a general statement. Don is correct in what he pointed out.

How can any of us provide more than a general opinion without actually seeing the dog and what it's behavior his?

doesnt , having him for a month , and he is running and hiding give you a clue

adjusting to new circumstances is fine  by me , but giving a dog a few months is just hilarious

Is he hiding? One persons hiding is another persons aloofness, you missed my point . Obviously the person is inexperienced with dogs or he would not be asking the question.

So instead of immediatelty assuming he bought a lemon, maybe try some constructive ideas for him.

I did not get the impression he bought a PPD or Schutzhund Dog, did you?

Ding, ding, ding! Exactly!

Listen, people have to stop going on the internet for advice. You'll find 50 different people with 50 different ideas and if you think you're going to try them all until something works, all you'll do is confuse the hell out of your dog, and yourself.

Find a trainer experienced in working dogs, security, property guarding, K9, etc. Take your dog to be evaluated by unbiased third party (and if they try to sell you a different dog they are NOT unbiased!). Let someone who knows what they're doing see the dog firsthand.

edit: Go weigh your dog. 28 inches is tall, but at 120 pounds I'll wager he isn't in shape.
