I'm very interested in hearing others views and opinions on the immune problems being seen in our breed... actually, in any breed.
The causes: Vaccines, wormers / parasite control products, what we feed our dogs?

My thoughts / actions: I don't vaccinate my dogs every year, infact I don't vaccinate at all after 6 - 7 years old. They have their "puppy shots" followed by the booster at around 15 - 18 months... then nothing for 3 years.
However, if I want to take Jimmy abroad, I have to have the vaccines and the wormers / parasite controls.
I never use "flea / tic products" on my dogs; I do spray the house every few months and I have NEVER had a problem... having had 5 dogs and two cats, all living indoors! I worm once a year unless circumstances dictate otherwise.
I have Jimmy on a "natural" diet, "Duck Excellent". He also has raw chicken, lamb bones etc. I know others have much to add here and I'm looking forward to soaking up some new info.

Hi Missbeeb,
Think a lot of how we feed our dogs and all this vacination protocol has a lot to answer for.
Mine have their 1st vac. once they are over 12 weeks of age, don't like to do it to early as they will have immunity from mum and don't want to overload their little systems. Then a booster a year later and thats it. I would titre (sp) test but gosh don't the vets make that expensive.
I feed a totally raw diet and only worm once a year.
Unfortunately the ones that are pet passported have to have their vacs kept up todate and obviously when they come back from abroad they have to have the wormer and flea and tick treatment. Once we nolonger need the pet passport that all stops wish it wasn't necessary in the 1st place.

I don't feed a raw diet (although I am not against this at all); it is just more convenient for me to feed a complete additive free food, as I have quite a few dogs (I actually feed Arden Grange and Naturediet). I also give probiotics and homeopathic nosodes. I can't remember the last time I treated a dog for fleas and I don't routinely use any of the 'spot ons'. I am a great believer in: 'If it aint broke, don't fix it'. I do worm them however, twice a year, with Drontal alternating with Panacur. Pregnant bitches are wormed with Panacur from 6 weeks and obviously pups are wormed every 2 weeks.
My own personal opinion is that I think vaccines play a significant part in damaging the immune system. The advice I give to my owners is to have the first jab done as late as possible, say minimum 10 weeks, but preferably 12 weeks (giving nosodes in the meantime) and leave 4 weeks between the jabs and never do boosters. By leaving the first jab until later, the pup only requires 1 x DHPP and can then be given 1 x Lepto (which is of dubious efficacy) only for the 2nd jab.
I am sure many will disagree, but I have found that many dogs become ill after vaccination. The vets will say it's coincidence.....but I am not so sure.

Yes. high time there was an affordable test available for us all. It can't be so difficult to test for immunity status, can it? Of course the pharmaceutical companies will be dead against it as will some Vets... it's their bread and butter!
I'd happily pay £50 a year for that!

I feed Duck Excellent because it's complete. I didn't want to have to give supplements. I honestly think that if enough peeps insisted, the pharmaceutical companies & Vets would have to come up with an affordable test.
There are more and more people NOT vaccinating every year, NOT worming every 3 - 4 months (as recommended by Vets), but we need more info.

Now, that's very interesting as my old Vet told me that Lepto was the one, "you really had to have done every year". If there are no antibodies, can there be any worth?
I thought it was more expensive than that to have a titre test... I'm more than happy to pay that amount.
