when importing a puppy from Europe are they doing microchip id only (not tattoo) and what does that cost?
by SitasMom on 14 December 2010 - 19:12
all depends on where they're imported from.
the cost should be part of the puppy price and not an extra charte.
in many countres, the puppy's tattoo is the same as their pedigree number....

thanks SM. I was told it costs a few hundred bucks to microchip.

crazy!
a chip costs about 20$ and you can do it yourself.

its important that its an "international" chip.

My pup has one of those international chips and all the vets, animal control, etc do not have a reader that will pick up the chip. It takes a speical reader, I am not sure how mainstreamed it is in the US at this point. I am considering some other means of ID as well. Not sure what though. Scary to me that even though she has a chip it could potentially be worthless in the event she is lost.

my dogs have the 15 digit home again chips and no problems - the multi chip readers pick them up easily.
Avid has a "pet" chip and an international chip......its difficult to tell them apart

Some people have 2 chips put in their dogs, one international, and one that all the local North American vet, shelter, and animal control readers will pick up. If you are really concerned, that's an option. It should NOT cost more than $30 to have done, and takes literally 2 seconds. It is a very large gauge needle (I would say probably a 10 gauge), and some dogs I've done make a big fuss, but my WL pup didn't even notice it with a small food distraction.
