Hi all,
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered a million times already. However, for my peace of mind can anyone advise me of any factual evidence if it is best that a dog be kept outside in a kennel or in a house? I guess what I'm really asking is; will Bear be cold kept outside all through the winter (please bear in mind I live in the UK).
I would hate to think I am being cruel by starting to keep bear outside over night.
Any feedback would be helpful
Thanks,
H

When you say kept out side you could mean in a nice kennel or chained to a tree, could you be more specific? If she has a proper inclouser to get in with dry bedding and clean water she should be fine. Are you planning on leaving her out for good or just at nite?.

Sorry,
To clarify, he has a proper Kennel which has a shelved bed area off the floor so its dry and he has a nice thick bed to sleep on too.

Most dogs prefer to sleep outside. As long as it is cleanish (not poop and such) and dry, the dog will be fine.

Hi H,
What does Bear want?
What I mean is does he prefer to be outside or inside most of the time?
If he prefers to be outside and is kept outside most of the time then he will be happier outside. Even if you are not.
If he prefers to be inside most of the time, you may want to build him up to it by gradually leaving him out for longer periods of time until he is acclimated to the temperature change.
As long as he has an enclosure that he can get into that will keep him dry with the proper bedding he should stay warm enough. Mother Nature has a way of taking care of her creatures.
Hope that helps,
C

My dogs go out into a large fenced area with access to the Deck and Back Door. Though there are 2 dog houses in the area I've never seen any of them go inside. Hot days they'll go under the deck or the bushes by the chimney... but most of the time they lay on the deck as close to me as they can get. Health wise there's no reason a GSD couldn't weather the outdoors with a good warm house to curl in... but if your dog is as bonded to you as mine are to Bev and I they wouldn't want to spend more than an hour or two out at one time. They've got beds and blankets in the bedroom, or a Crate in the DR for nite time. I also keep them in at night for their safety... thieves, kids with guns, digging out, bears etc are all very real risks here. This way I can sleep in peace and not worry about them
