HI,
Just became a member today. Had a long page typed up and accidentally put it under "galleries". Now lost it so a shorter version.
Conflicting information; mating during heat, by vets/vet tech blogs: 1st. Mating should take place 10-12 days after first sign of color, (blood) #2. Mating should take place during the 9-10 days after start of the heat ( I know the heat is @ 21 days) and 3rd. mating should take place during the second week.
 Which is correct?
Also, looking for information on freeze drying the sperm. I'm out of Maryland.

Thanks.

That depends on the female, i have one female that is  ready on day 14 ( from first day of blood), i have another female that is ready on day 12, this would be the standard time.  but there have been females ready to breed on day 5- 18. so it really depends on your female. the avarege is 12-14 days. most are done on day 21 , but i have seen some last 30 days.

Counting days is a bit of hit and miss, their cycles can change from heat to heat..blood test or try with an experienced male, its only way of having a reasonable chance and even then its not guaranteed.dont think freeze DRYING the semen is to be recommended, mite be ok to use FROZEN semen.if your goin down that avenue i'd get a vet on board.

Trixx, thanks, I was thinking that just needed to hear it. Put out a few calls at the time of her bleeding but no returns. Was a little worried and read where these sites were helpful and informative, took a chance. Thanks. Doqud shepherd, my fault, wrong words, thanks.

I mated a female 2 days ago and she was day 23 the day was determined by blood testing her progesterone levels.

yes an progestrone test is your best bet to know for sure as i have a female that stands for 11 days , so i need to know the best time. i would just get her tested when she starts to stand , as she stands so long.. but my other girl , when she stands she is ready and only stands 5 days, so they all are very different.
