hello friends, its a long text but this is the worst situation i am facing with and extremely important to me.
I have some German shepherds who live in my backyard kennel, i constructed that kennel with runways for them and installed cooling systems in summer. My dogs play football in a nearby park, I frontline my dogs after every 1.5 months, last month the grass in that park was really big and one of the dog got some ticks. I tried to pluck ticks with tweezer and I had to go out of city for a week, when i came i saw soooo many ticks on that dog it was like i couldn't see her eyes properly due to ticks if i pet her there was no part of her body which did not have uncountable ticks, if she walked ticks are falling etc I could see ticks everywhere in her kennel, walls/roof/floor there were like hundred of ticks and i almost burned all. i thought she'd get tick fever so i immediately took her to vet, and she had tick fever :( vet gave me some anti-biotic and a liquid to mix in water and apply on her and to keep that dog away from other dogs. So i kept her to our guest room and hired a professional who sprayed all kennels specifically her kennel and my complete house plus the empty land around my home boundaries, walls etc there was not an inch where we didn't spray, and in her kennel i sprayed 2 different types of liquids which were best in market. It was so expensive for me but anyhow i did it to permanently get rid of this problem, I used to see dozens of Cockroaches and other insects dead daily and did not see anymore tick in her kennel, I even cemented her kennel floor once again(it was already cemented),  that liquid which Vet gave to apply on her body that didn't work ticks were still there.
After 3 days i again took her to vet and he gave some powder to mix in water and apply, I used to brush her 2-3 times a days and killed 40-50 ticks every day. After 3-4 days more than half of her ticks were gone. My vet told me not to apply the remaining powder before one week that could be poisonous. Last night i checked her body properly and didn't see any more tick on her so i shifted her to kennel again, after 1 hour when i went to see her it was shocking to see dozens of ticks in her kennel again in 1 hour . So i immediately shifted her again to guest room now i can again feel some ticks on her. During this period she was so weak due to tick fever, she stopped eating so i used to sit with her for hours and feed her with my hands etc. After a lot lot lot of work she is once again getting healthy but I am extremely worried of the situation I saw Yesterday :( I dont know how to get rid of them where did they come from again. Vet told the spray you had can last for couple of months and can kill all ticks (he actually told me that spray which had 100 cyper in it). I really love her a lot, she is the best friend I ever had, She's the one in my profile picture. I dont want her to be sick once again but iam worried what to do :( some of my friends who live in the same street they also got some dogs but they never had this prob, i also never faced this situation before my dogs are living in same kennels from last 3 years. Now i am afraid that till that day i never took my dogs to park but take them to walk/exercise daily. but ........ :(

Something is not right about this story. Or not enough information. Where do you live?

I will tell you also to learn about the life cycle of ticks. You can avoid infestations by avoiding critical emergence times. Also, from personal experience, the leader of a group will get the worst of the tick attacks, because their movement triggers the "jump" response.

Cover yourselves on hikes, and check your dogs daily if you have such an infestation as you describe.

The area i live does not have tick history as every second home around my home got 2-3 dogs, i talked to them but they never face this situation. Even the breeder i who sold me this dog lives 100 meters to my home and he was also shocked to see this all. I live in Lahore, Pakistan. And the area i live in Lahore is considered one of the posh areas in Pakistan (just to tell that we don't have crops/uncleaned environment here). The breeder told me that his dogs get ticks sometimes(very rare and few) but you dont worry the season of ticks is going and now his dogs don't have anymore ticks left but when he came yesterday he was also worried. she is ruining her skin due to biting/scratching and i can see lot of wounds where 4-5 ticks was biting together :(. This picture was taken before 1 week of this attack :)

@beetree yup i do that regularly now, but for the time being the main issue is to get rid of ticks in the kennel. it is not easy for me to go out of budget again and spray that didn't work before :( she used to have small and big ticks before big ticks like THESE and small ticks like THESE
but now she has only small ticks, in her kennel and on her body. I will get rid of ticks on her body but i am just worried about those in kennel :(

I'm so sorry to hear about your tick issue. Are you or your dog in contact with any chickens / cattle in any way?
In your area they routinely get infested with ticks. If you have mice / rats / rabbits / bats, etc.. they will all bring in ticks also. You must eliminate any small rodent problem to prevent tick infestation again.

Also, the method of spraying could also change the odds of the tickets coming back. If you have any plants, cracks, mulch, tall grass, etc.. this will all provide hiding spots for the ticks. So even though you sprayed the area the ticks will hide on the other side of a leaf or in cracks where the spray couldn't reach them. Also most sprays are destroyed by sun light. If you sprayed early morning or mid day, the ticks would just wait until the the spray wasn't effective any more. Ticks can also sense the application of the spray being put on the ground from a distance. They will crawl away to hide or out of reach, but return again.

It sounds like one or all of the above happen with you to get infested again. I would advice to clean the kennel.
After the kennel has been cleaned, place a tall large trash can in the center of the kennel. Fill the trash can half way with water & tick poison. Place well oiled pipes making a X shape in the center of the trash can on top of it. Place a small bowel on top of the pipes in the center of the X. Fill the bowel with bird seed & nuts. The seed will attract any rodents in your area for the free lunch. As they cross your kennel area, ticks will jump on the rodents.
The rodents will slip on the oiled pipes & fall into the poisoned water. You'll rid yourselves of many rodents & ticks at the same time. Plus you'll also attract a lot of birds to the seed. Once the birds are there they will gladly eat the ticks too. Leave this out for 2-3 weeks. Then remove & clean the kennel again.

After 3 weeks you should spray again. This time spray at dust so it'll have the entire night to kill the ticks & not get broken down by the sun. Start spraying the outside boundaries & work in to the center, so the ticks can't escape.
Have some one help you. One person use a broom to sweep the grass lightly to expose the bottom of the plant.
You don't want the spray to just sit on top of the grass but reach the bottom where the ticks will be hiding. Spray all angels & bottom of plants also. The make sure the spray gets into any cracks & on walls where ticks will hide.

Once the ticks are gone, try introducing plants that will attract birds that eat harmful insects like ticks into your yard.

Good luck

How horrible! I'm so sorry for you & your best friend. I hope that you have great success removing ticks from your kennels. Perhaps leave your good girl in the guest room until all is clear. Good luck! jackie harris

cphudson
please post photos of this rodent killing / bird attracting divice...... a good frined is interested in non-poisionious way to kill ticks and rodents too.

For ticks already imbedded in your dog, put 1 drop of cinnimon oil on each tick and they drop right off, then squash them.

We had a really bad tick issue this year too, frontline is no longer as affective, we had to go to the vet and get a different brand of tick drops.
