My 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd was just diagnosed with Pannus. My Vet gave me Tacrolimus 0.02% for my dog. The Vet said that this was a much newer and stronger midication that just came out and is showing positive signs. My GS has been using it for 2 weeks now. Has anyone used this Medication and have seen positive results? Also is Pannus a life-long disease? Will my dog have to be on medication for the rest of her life? My vet wants to try this first before we take the next step to see the Specialist. Any information would help. Thank you

Pannus is a life long disease and you will have to give your dog eye drops for the rest of her life. The good news is that the proper medicine will keep it under control and it will improve and have no negative effects so long as you keep her on the medicine.

Tacrolimus is not new. Canine optimologists have been using it for sometime now. The standard strength is generally considered to be .03%. It is generally recommended (unless the condition is very severe) that it be given once daily along with but not at the same time as a .01% solution of NeoPoly Dex.

I strongly suggest you visit a specialist. Pannus can be tricky to diagnosis and sometimes other conditions mimic it. The average vet probably sees 1/100 of the cases a canine optimologist sees.  Given that Tacrolimus is not cheap (compared to NeoPoly Dex which normally goes for about $4 a bottle), you would do well to make sure it is Pannus and also to make sure you are using the correct strength.

Hi. My bitch has suffered from Pannus for about 6 years.
She is now 11 and I have been treating her with Optimmune eye ointment since the condition was diagnosed.
I started off with 1/8 inch in each eye twice a day for about 3 months and then once a day for about a year.
I then cut it down to once every other day and this amount has kept her eyes clear and no signs of any deterioration at all. A 35g tube of Optimmune comfortably lasts the whole month of recommended useage even at the higher dose.

Is Pannus hereditary?

Good question, there may not be a definitive answer.  So, possibly!  It's likely to be a factor but also it's believed that it's also an immune issue...with the dog's immune system attacking the cells in the cornea.  The other factor apparently may be sunlight - with dogs who spend a lot of time outside and in high places more likely to develop.  Sadly it's one of those complex issues where we don't really know and we don't have a 'cure' although it can be held in check.

Results of testing so far point to the fact it is not.
One animal in a litter was seen here in the UK which came from  a litter  of 12 pups. The rest were seen and observed by a Optomologist and none of the others developed it.
The one animal is still participating in Working Trials having got to T.D. level.
Bot Sire and Dam did not have any problems when tested.
