Hi All,
As an ex Clyde Valley GSD club vice- chairman, and ex-exhibitor I like to drop in to shows now and then, to meet old friends and see how the breeds progressing.
When at Clyde Valley champ show to-day I was disgusted by the attitude of the KC rep ( Jan Hunter) regarding dogs under 6momths being in the show area, whilst we all know the KC rule regarding this, when does common sense kick in with these people. This was a BREED show where nobody was complaining about young dogs being there except the KC rep.  She actually had committee members running scared with the threat they might loose their CC,s.
Do these KC reps forget people travel long distances to attend shows and spend a fair bit of money doing so.

Imo the quicker the clubs tell the KC what to do with their CC,s the better the show scene will be.

tell me if i,m wrong, but i was under the impression that puppies four months and over could attend shows as long as they were entered NFC.We all know that ppl.take puppies and have done ever since i started the show scene in 1987 to general open shows and most times nothing is ever said.I noticed that at a open show in my area next weekend there,s a companion show.yu can bet ya bottom dollar that they,ll be some pups entered that will be claimed as 6mths when they aint.ppl.do put false info on these slips one fills out.I remember one KC rep.complaining at a 2 day show at Weston Pk.one year.Carole S.

K.C rules it is time that they were changed but hae we are the common people we are the ones that keep the KC going in money so they think they can do what they like with us  but I think they will find that we are getting sick of them    If the kc dont get off our backs they are the ones who are going to lose out as there will be no KC run gsd shows as we will go to the progressive group shows ect   also it is important for young puppys to get out and about to as many different places as possible to get socialized  as this is most important for any breed of puppy does the KC not know this are they that stupid  they should go and educate themselfs about puppys and health issues and a hole bunch ot other things

Lets face it the KC see only as far as the end of their nose and their purse strings.   They want the revenue from people, but they are showing again - today it seems - that they care not a fig for the dog welfare.
What is an exhibitor supposed to do that travels a long distance to attend a show.  Should she keep her puppy in the car cooped up all day so that Jan Hunter can tick her boxes, or should she leave the puppy at home all day, so that Jan Hunter can tick her boxes... puppies need feeds mid-day.   Should the exhibitor not care about the puppy being socialised and amongst like minded people who love the breed, and ther dogs, so that no fear of other dogs occurs - no, neither the KC nor its employees cares that far..... what do they say about themselves ?- Welfare of the Canine World at Heart    Yeah right. !
On the other subject, the committee need to sit down and evaluate whether their precious freely given time was well spent and stress free - because the committee`s at the Regional shows are certainly finding it that way, heaps of help, support, and no such stupid rules apply....   and know what - there has been no accidents, fights, puppies running amok or the like at any of them, just relaxed folk enjoying their chosen hobbies.   Well done to Clyde Valley for putting on the show, and shame on the KC rep that she felt it worth threatening CC`s if a puppy under six month dared to come out and enjoy itself.    Mo.

Mo well said I agree

Puppies of four months may be entered at breed club shows.  This is a clear rule and the answer to the question what are people supposed to do if they have younger puppies is yes, they should leave them at home, and if they have not got someone to look after them then they should not go to the show.  Or is a rosette so important?  There are plenty of places to socialise a puppy without breaking KC rules. Four months is plenty young enough for a dog to spend a long day travelling and out at a show.

Who would be a committee member when after all their hard work some ignorant exhibitor decides to flaunt the KC rules.

First things first Clyde Valley show is held in Strathclyde park which is a public park now if i wish to walk my puppy of 3 months in a public park then i will and no KC rep can tell me not to, if i wish to stop and watch the show while i am there then i can do so after all it is a public park not private, so this rule can only work when a show is held indoors and not open to the unpaying public.

You took the words right out my mouth Jim, how the hell can the KC decide who walks their dogs in a public park?  JEES!!!!

Excellent Post Mo.

Doppleganger, you are right of course about KC rules, problem is this particular KC rep demanded that ANY puppy UNDER SIX MONTHS of age MUST VACATE the precincts of the show. Presumably because there were no NFC entries in the catalog. At a single Breed Show I personally find this a ridiculous rule, why should a breed club be expected to charge its members for bringing their pups and/or oldies along to the show with them. Of course its not as easy for the KC rep to be so pedantic when it come to an older dog since they have no way of proving whether it is entered or not (as the KC do not demand an entered dog to be identifiable, as we do at Regional shows) .

As for your last sentence Doppleganger, there you go again with head high up in the KC ridiculous bureaucracy that you cant see the wood for the trees, those very committee members you speak about will probably have pups they need to bring with them, after all they are expected to spend a whole day at the showground, setting up the rings etc then taking it all down again after its ended. Willing Committee members are thin on the ground these days with experienced committee members even harder to find (let alone keep), with your type of attitude even fewer KC single breed shows would be held. Mo was right on the nail when she said the Regionals get more help, thats because the rules allow for commeradery, a coming together of like minded people with a love for a breed to have fun and enjoy their hobby.

I will never forget the BC meeting on this very topic when someone said that some people enjoy double attracting their dogs as it is a way of them expressing their excitement , just like spectators at other sports encourage their teams by cheering them on, when someone who (surprisingly) has made it very clear they are on the KC side in all this actually said "But you're not there to enjoy yourself" !!   Well that about sums the KC attitude up I suppose.
But if shows are not supposed to give us enjoyment, what the blooming eck are they for? And why would anybody want to spend thousands of pounds, get up early at weekends to drive thousands of miles to attend an event that they are not expected to enjoy?? The mind boggles at the ridiculous notions some people carry around in their head and this person supposedly had a university education.  Just proves that no matter how intelligent you may be, there is nothing better or more special than pure  Common Sense.

Regards
Sue b
