Hello you of those that know something about tracking LOL. WEe started our 4 month old GSD doing a little Shutzhund a couple of weeks ago. The lady that is helping meteach her to track wants the puppy to get each treat out of each footstep along the way. The problem is that our pup knows that the grand prize (a whole handfull) is at the end of the track. She starts at the begining of the track and then goes like crazy picking up a piece now and then along the way until she gets to the end of the track and gets the large handfull of food.

She pulls like crazy until she gets to the end of the track and isn't interested in slowing down to make sure she gets each piece. I've try to hold her back and point out each and every piece along the way but she isn't interested in the little treats, she wants to get to the grand prize. Is this a bad thing and if it is how do I encourage her to slow down and get each piece from each foot step?

My work schedule isn't going to let me get her to training for another couple of weeks so I can't show the lady that is helping me what is actually going on.

Thanks for any help you can give me,
Mick

Here are some things that might be useful:

-Instead of putting a big pile of treats at the end of your track put only few - 6 or so. So the dog doesn't have a big prize at the end.
- Looks like her food drive is not as high as it should be if she rushed pass the food. You might try reduce her food intake little bit to bring it up. Don't starve her for a day instead feed her lass for a week or two.  How much you giving her now and what kind of food?
-You can "hide" each piece by pushing it deep in the grass with your finger. It should take some time for your dog to get it out and it will slow down her some. (Again, the food drive needs to be there for her wanting to take the food).
-Don't let her pul. Give her only enough leash to reach the next step and as soon as she get's her nose down (and will take time to get the food from grass)  you release the tension of the leash.
The fact that leash is tight encourages your dog to go faster. It's an opposition reflex. You should get in the rhythm of working your line by releasing tension as soon as her nose down in the next step.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
