My boy has hot spots on his tail, and I've been spraying it with Vets Best (Tea Tree, Chamomile, Aloe) but he just won't stop biting....his tail has spots without hair and he looks awful. I've checked him for fleas and I can't find any...but he has white powdery residue on his skin...what should I do?

I feed him canidae and have been for over a year but he's just started biting himself like this...

Take him to a vet. With hot spots you get a secondary skin infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics. Also, he is going to have to wear the "funny hat" e-collar if he can't leave it alone while it heels.

Whereabouts are the hotspots?
There is a sebaceous gland [supracaudle gland] near the base of the tail in dogs, can be about 6" from base of tail, that sometimes becomes over-active and/or infected causing itchiness which is referred to as supracaudle gland hyperplasia.
My GSD has had this before and I treated it by using Malaseb shampoo and Fuciderm gel.
Do a Google search for tail gland hyperplasia dogs and look at the images also to see if the hotspots your dog has resemble any shown on the images.
