Those that know DDR dogs, what is your OPINION on the best and worse producing dogs and which ones would you look for in a pedigree (both because you wanted or didn't want those dogs) if you were looking to get a new puppy? PLEASE, LETS KEEP THIS POST ON TOPIC UNLIKE THE OTHER DDR POSTS THAT ALWAYS GET OFF TOPIC BECAUSE OF THE DISLIKE OF DDR_ISH. If you want to post about her and she about you start your own post please.

My favored line (11b?) is greatly influenced by Ex v Reidstern.  Ex ~> Ingo v Rudingen (3-2 on Ex) > Held v Ritterberg (mother 2-2 on Bernd Lierberg) > Bero v Friedersdorfer flur (5,4-4,5,4 on Ex).

Many of my dogs went to Held, and pretty much all of them went to Ex.  Faro Policia was linebred 3-2 on Bero, the nearest/most DDR blood of his pedigree.

I crossed Faro to a line 13a(?) female who's herself linebred 3-4,5 on Alf v Körnersee.

When I backcross again toward the DDR blood, it will be with further emphasis on Faro, Bero and Held.  I don't care much for line 13.

Hello again Daryl. You may not remember me but I got in contact with you a couple of months ago or so. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about DDR dogs/lines. I've read something before about some people not liking the 13A line. What about it is bad and causes some people not to like it?

I don't know that I can give a fair opinion, based on only having two dogs, siblings, from that line. The oversized male I sold at 11 months age, and kept the female

Much of what I needed to improve in the DDR female was provided for by Faro. I only kept one female from the resulting litter (the line 11 & 13 combo), who was to my taste too handler-soft, but otherwise a very good balance of working drives, biddability, and aggression.

I think the biggest problem with line 13a, is considering how to get out of line 13a.  IOW, what to outcross with.  Too many people are still trying to maintain the "100% DDR" slogan for campaigning their litters, and line 13a is the most easily available and most linebred upon today.

The shortcomings I find, may not be the same as experienced by others, given my limited exposure.  So, be sure to consult other breeders of that DDR line before drawing any serious conclusions.

unclemick , like daryl , most people will give you their opinion about a line , ONLY based on the one or two dogs they ever seen from that line
since the lines are mixed up , and most dogs are outcrossed from here to hell and back , there is no answer to that question im my opinion , and no ones one or two dogs are representing a whole line

find a breeder  that breeds quality stock and has proven again and again to have made right breeding choices , look for a breeder with quality females and look to what they produced before
forget about breeders that breed the flavour of the day

forget about breeders that buy a male , breed it to everything they have for a year or two ,than buy a new male , and so on

good luck

I would go so far as to say, exclude any breeders that breed only DDR lines, because that's primarily all they're selecting for; a paper mapped heritage.  No different or better than prioritizing for color.

Thanks for the replys! I do already have a pup, mostly DDR (about 90% I'd guess) with a bit of Czech in her background. I'm not an expert with only having one GSD before and although she was AKC I couldn't find enough info on her background to figure out where she was from. Great pet (heart dog of a life time for me) but not good for working at all. Compaired to her this pup is NOT handler soft and is quite a bit more driven (also allot more stuborn). Good or bad I've made a choice on which pup we have and she's here to stay.

I'm just really interested in finding out more about DDR dogs. I've read just about everything I can find on the internet, now it's down to trying to find individuals who know more about the lines and dogs themselves and picking their brains. I actually have no other purpose in this except to gain more knowledge about DDR dogs then I have now. I just find them kind of interesting.

You should pose the question on ddrlegends.  It's amazing how little they know about the lines they're primarily concerned with and breed upon, but I'm sure you can gain a few useful gems of knowledge you don't already know.

I use that board also(DDR Legends) but hardly ever go there because it isn't a very busy board and going there once a week or so is plenty to keep up with it. I also don't post much so I'm not a familiar name there either LOL. I will put a posting there, just thought of this board first because I check it more often.

Unclemick, I think that Duke1965 has given some good insights. JMO.
