Hello!
I am having a tough time finding a collar online that my trainer recommened for my GSD because I do not remember the name. Our next training session is on Saturday and I have wished to order this collar by then, so hopefully you guys can help me.
My trainer described the collar as a flat, yet very thin collar and it resembeled the pinch collar without the pincher portion. It was made out of a fine stainless steel and these collars are often used in show.
Reason I am instered in the collar is due to the thick coat of the breed, I only use the collar for his tags, and I never hook a lead to the tag collar. I either use a pinch or collar similar to it for training, walking, running, etc. So, to me, there is no reason to have just a big, bulky collar on him to hold his tags, expecially in the summertime.

Eager to hear your response!!

Britney,

Are you thinking of a fursaver?  It's like a choke collar only with larger links supposedly to keep from breaking the fur.  It is a collar for training only, do not put tags on it or ever leave it on your dog when you're not training as he could get caught up and choke on it.

Ruger - thank you!

FHTracker - Is there something else you would recommend? Koda is about 6 months and weighs 65 lbs. It seems as though the larger he grows the thicker the collars at the store become and I don't want something so bulky.

Hi,

I only use fursaver collars with my dogs and they have them on all the time (except when in house alone). We never had any bad experiences and we had tags on them (on the ring that doesn't tighten). You can use fursavers for all adult GSD's, they are strong and dureable, don't damage the coat and you hardly see them.
There are also fursaver show collars which are nice for conformation because you won't see a mark from the collar on photos.Of course, you don't want any tags on those.

Very Nice picture - your pup is very nice....

But I have to say - Who gives a crap on what you can put a "tag" on....  if you are going to train your dog - you have a 6 month old pup - there is a fur saver.  But me being a female - not to strong - I have to use a prong...  I started out with the largest prong   I think it was a 4.0  I am now on a 2.25 H.S.  The smaller the prong the more correction.   If you pup pulls you down the road and you can't control him - it is time for a prong... Even if you are a male - just my personal opinion that a prong is the way to go..

I  am not sure what you mean by "thick coat"   your dog is no different than any other GSD....
I am not a strong corrector - but just putting it on my dogs - they know it is time to work....I have a flat collar on my dogs when they are with me - with ID if that is what you are concerned with......

Here are the collars I use

flat
fur saver
prong
e collar

Not sure there is anything else you might need...

I use the fursavers on my dogs but I can no longer buy the really nice fine ones these days, all I can find are the heavy thick chain ones and I don't like them so if anyone knows where to buy the finer chain ones PLEASE let me know.

Britny,
For an id tg collar that I keep on my dogs at all times when we are not  training, I use rolled leather collars. I have flat collars too with id tags (yes I collect collars and id tags...sigh) The rolled leather is way less bulky than a flat collar and supposed to do less damage to the fur. I really like them.
It seems like it's also hard to find a collar with a regular old fashioned metal buckle too, just those cheesy plastic buckles

Anyway, here is an a link with rolled leather collars. I have never used this company, so I'm not necessarily recommending them, just saw they had them in large sizes, and by the sound of it your boy will be large ;-)

Best wishes
