I just got an email from Koos Hassing that Max Van Tiekehook has passed away last week. That sucks big time!
I am sad, he was a true son of a legend Nick, and his pedigree was loaded with Hall of Fame dogs. An intense, no nonsense dog, always impressive.

What....I find it hard to believe. I saw Koos training him only last year and Max was looking tough even though he was retired for competition. It is a real shame and lost to the GSD breed. I was even hoping oneday to take one of his progeny.
My condolences to Koos.

For novices who like to know more about this dog, can some one elaborate more on him, his achievements, his contribution to the breed etc.
Thanks
Ibrahim

Only 8 years old, a shame, my condolences. Poseiden, you may still be able to obtain a Max pup, according to the website he has frozen sperm available.

It is a big loss. Koos Hassing sure picked a good one.
Ibrahim wanted to know more about this dog. He is a throwback to old, early GSD breeders when the ideal was to breed a tough dog, with super prey drive, super stable nerves and very agressive and dominant.
Not a dog for everyone, for sure. Intense, when barking, it sounded like he had shaving razors for breakfast and was spitting them out to a decoy challenging them. To describe the dog in 5 words or less: one tough, serious mo fo.
His pedigree reads like Who's Who of the Hall of Fame working GSDs, like 1992 Barcelona Dream Team USA Basketball: Nick vom Heiligenbösch, Half vom Ruhbachtal, Timmy von der bösen Nachbarschaft, Arek vom Stoffelblick, Troll von der bösen Nachbarschaft, Mona von der Döllenwiese, Yoschy von der Döllenwiese, Fero vom Zeuterner Himmelreich...
Here is an example, just a small example, of what a classic hold and bark, the way textbooks talk about it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7GhiBeW614
Hold and Bark is consistent, rhytmic, clear as a bell, methodical, focused... It annoys me to no end to see dogs that are looking around, bark, bark... whereis the handler... bark... who is this guy? Oh, the judge... Bark. Oh, my handler is coming, I will give 2 more yaps, I mean barks, then he'll call me off. This guy is focused, he doesn't give 2 fucks about where anyone is or what's going on away from him and the blind, or the handler encouraging him, it is him and a helper and he is there to do business.
If dogs could talk, he is saying in the hold and bark to the helper: You move - I will fuck you up and you are dead meat!
Look at the escape... Most dogs when outed just stare intently at the helper saying - your move. This dog immediately goes back into hold and bark, again saying: You are dead if you move, dude!
Pay attention when the dog engages the helper on the escape attack, again, classic texbookk example, it's about PREVENTING the helper to escape... well, every time the dog grabs the sleeve. Most dogs just hang onto sleeve, and dance besides. This one violently shakes the sleeve agressively trying to take him down.
Now, let's look at this year's BSP competitor Amon Von Patriot. Good dog? Yes, good dog, in very different way from Max, it wasn't showing that trademark full speed ahead agression in hold and bark as Max does - I will fuck you up decoy thing. he was barking, well, sort of prey bark... H, I am here.. please.. move...
Pay attention to the barking tone in hold and bark, especially the pitch of the bark (which is high). It's as convincing s Betty White plaing football in Snickers commercial. Later on, glancing at the handler approaching, hanging onto the sleeve, yappy bark again etc.. etc...
But, of course, his pedigree is different, too: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/445210.html than of Max, as dogs that are in Max bloodlines are PROVEN to give the traits to their progeny.
I hope that helps.
