I was just going through Youtube and I saw a video of a GSD 11 week pup learing to herd goats...I thought wow how nice...
I went throught and other video and I saw the hander over correcting the pup...or what I think is over correcting border line abuse... correct me if I am wrong...

I must have missed something.... Looked to me like the puppy lunged to the end of the line and corrected itself, a couple times actually. My question is; what the heck is that long thing the man is holding?

I didn't see much wrong with it. Ever see a mother correct it's pups? Now that looks harsh, they seem to know what they are doing though.
As for that long thing, I really don't know, I can only suggest it's to block the dog if he is getting to close to the flock. That's my best guess anyhow.

It's a long pvc pipe/pole with a bottle on the end. Frequently used in herding to help protect the stock and get the dog to move back off the stock.
Other than the pup hitting the end of the leash (which he seems to do mostly, but not entirely, to himself), it's a really very nice video of a puppy starting on livestock. Pretty impressive confidence and instinct being shown, imo. Here's the pup's pedigree: www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/632941.html

SwiftEagle - do you do goat herding? Why I ask - I don't see any correction what so ever by this man in the video..... The dog seems to be actually "herding" the goats - did I miss something - what do you see that is "harsh". and over correction - I am not into herding - but I just don't see it.

Hi guys, I am guessing I was very wrong since 5 people didnt see what I saw...
May be I got it wrong... and I should appologise for even creating the threat.... The video was taken from youtube so I can see it any longer.
I am sure he pulled the pup twice at the very begining of the video... I thought that was a bit to harsh..but it seems I that I could have miss understood what I saw..

Swifteagle, I saw what you saw, I think. The puppy lunged, the guy did pull when the puppy lunged, the pup flipped himself, got right up and did it again. In general, although that has the potential to be harsh, I don't think the guy was trying to flip the pup, and the puppy wasn't upset by it, never lost focus on the goats, and went right to work. So, it may have been deliberate or it may have been a sort of oops on the handler's part. The rest of the video the puppy isn't stressed nor is it corrected while working on the goats, so I don't think there's anything abusive going on.
