Just a post to get you thinking.

What really makes a great breeder?

Is it someone who has alot of VA's in the kennels?

Is it someone that all dogs are titled, but no Siegers?

Or is it someone that is working to better the breed regardless if the dogs are Sieger Show Winners or just a great companion?

Would you breed a dog that had High drives, confirmation, and temperament, but had a genetic fault, one that was not crippling, but still a fault by the standard?

Are we breeding dogs because we want a great working dog, but giving up important things because the dog won the Sieger Show, was the Best in Show at Cruff's, or won the BSP, but had progeny with HD, soft ears, etc?

What do you think?

I think a good breeder is the one who does not breed for the money gain as his/her true goal, breeds according to the standard and breeds healthy dogs and takes the dogs to good levels in training as much as possible in the area where he or she lives in plus places the puppies with the right homes, does not deceive people who buy the puppies by luring them into something the puppies are not.

A great breeder is the one who betters his or her lines by successfully producing better progeny than what he started with, titles the dogs and participates in shows etc, succeedes in placing the dogs in high level titles and achievements.

A great breeder might not be a good breeder.

Interesting question.  I'm surprised you don't have more opinions.  Ibrahim has given you a very good assessment.

There are many kinds of "great breeders", as not all of them show and title their dogs.  Most of them either show or compete as it is very time consuming to do both.  It is not unusual to ship a dog to Germany to get titled and koerred.  Many place their pups into homes that will show or work the pups and enhance the standing of the sire and/or dam.

There is no such thing as a "perfect dog, or breeders would not continue working towards that goal.  Some will breed dogs with such faults on the balance of what they do have to contribute and try to breed out the faults/defects.  Those who are not great breeders attempt to do so based on chance instead of the best science available at the time.

A great breder may not be one that is profitable.
