Bear carlo

by Bear carlo on 12 May 2010 - 19:05

I have a 6 1/2 month gsd, He is a big dog and needs worming as his 3 months are up. Am i better off going to a vet? Do they provide you with a better product than we can buy ourselves off a shelf?
If not can someone tell me what the best stuff to get him is?

Also he eats like a horse. I've recently gone slightly over the recommended amount on pro plans packaging as he was looking very slim. A bit to slim I thought. However, he is just constantly hungry and wanting food. I know this is a general dog thing. However, I''m just a tad worried as he does look a little skinny and he appears to have become rather lethargic. He has good exercise everyday and seems to love it. Just round the house his slowing down somewhat and sleeping lots.

help is appreciated.

Definitely go to the vet;  I recommend Drontal Plus from the vet it is given by weight and probably need to repeat in 2-4 weeks.  Good luck and good health.

I use Drontal Plus too, acquired from the vets and have never had any problems.

As Nans said, I would get him checked out by the vet if he seems lethargic and sleeping a lot. However, I have found with my GSD's, as they mature they become more relaxed and more sensible in the house and they save the mad running around for their walks.

Re, the looking skinny, what are his stools like? I know it may seem strange, but I always check my dogs stools as it is a good indicator if there is anything wrong.

The feeding guidelines on a bag, are just recommendations. I have found over the years that some dogs need less, some more, dependant on their age and their activity level and their personalities. When I say personalities, some dogs are generally more laid back and less exciteable than others. Also the better quality the food, the less you generally need to feed as well.

When pups are growing, they can also go through awkward stages where they may appear a bit more "leggy" or slimmer.

But certainly if it were myself, I would have a chat with the vets and have Bear checked over for piece of mind to ensure everything is ok.

Best wishes..

You can buy Drontal Plus just about anywhere online. I use Nemex 2, myself. Same thing.

You should get a fecal test prior to worming, so you know what type of worms he has.  Different medications kill different worms. So yes, I would get it from my vet, if he even has worms.
