WEEEEEEELLLLL, waddya think? Shall I keep a pair of girls out of my litter? There's no way I can choose between them, at least now. How old do you think they'll be when all hell breaks loose?

by Nans gsd on 12 May 2010 - 02:05

Weeeeell, are we talking future brood bitches, companions, need to carry on your lines, or just can't decide?  Or all of the above.  You know, I kept two sisters for 5 years, they loved each other, were good company for each other, ran togther forever and also got into trouble together.  They were truly inseperable;  and beautifu to boot.  I finally at 3 l/2 years old, OFA both girls to find out one had really bad hips;  placed her in pet home at 5 spayed and the other one died at 8 l/2 with mammary cancer so there you have it.  Goes to show you.  Got no puppies out of either so crap.

But in all honesty;  YES I would do it if I had the space and would MAKE the time.  Double training, double expenses, double feed double trouble.  BUT love the girls, especially when they all get along with everyone and work as a team together;  love that togetherness.  Nan  PS:  I know I have probably not helped you but, YES, keep both until you are ready to make a decision, maybe that time wont come.  Nan

Thanks, Nans. All I ever hear is how bad it will be. But I had a mother/daughter pair, and they were inseparable, and continued to groom each other until the mother died. I may turn out to be keeping a male and a female, which would be fine until the heat part, but boy, I really like both these girls. I may have to keep 3 to grow out a little until I make up my mind!

Hi Vom Marischal,
My advise is keep them both, at least until old enough to prove hips and elbows ok. If reared and socialised properly,  which I am sure you will do, you shouldnt have any problem with them been kept together, just make sure you dont let jealousy creep in, treat both the same and give each their own individual attention as well as joint playtime and you shouldnt have any bother.

Then once you know the hips/elbows are ok on both, you can either decide to keep both or let one go, by that time the best one of the two should be evident. If however they still both remain as good as each other and you need to let one go, I am sure you shouldnt have any problems getting someone to have one in partnership with you, or on breeding terms to give you something back to ensure you dont loose your line.
Good Luck with them. By the way both the sisters Kassieger Renata and Rianne lived and played together quite happily here until Renata went to Germany at 14mths of age. They were still fine with each other when they met up again in Germany the other week, after they had not seen each other for over 2months.

Thanks! Then I will definitely do it! They are very different personalities and I can't just choose one...

by Nans gsd on 12 May 2010 - 19:05

VM:  My  two sisters were also both beautiful; both moved well, great personalities I could not have chosen one if I had to;  I also got back a litter brother when he was 5 years old from previous show owners that threw him away which I still have now at almost 10.  I figure it was meant to be.  Have never looked back.  Loved all three of them and the boy Rocky is an extremely nice dog and gets along with his obnoxious 4 year old son and everyone else on earth.  Exceptional dogs so YES GROW them all up and I'll bet they all will produce differently.  The above dogs were exceptional and their mother wasmy beloved service dog for 10 years and special girl does not say enough for her.  However, she did not throw those qualities; they were still exceptional dogs in their time.  Dogs that have stayed with me for life.  Nan

We have 2 sisters from our litter. I was going to keep the one girl, & then had a buyer back out on the other, & in the mean time, my hubby fell in love with her, & she with him.....they are very competetive. They're OK as long as they're supervised when they're together. They're always happy to see each other, but before too long they find something to squabble over.........they both get along with the other dogs just fine.  I would never leave them out unattended together, (I don't ever leave any dog unattended anyway!) but other than that, it's all good! jackie harris
