I am sitting here in Denmark and often the rottie people that is shifting to the mal because they want a breed with more drive and focus

I see GSD handlers to shifting to maybe a mal but not as often as the people with the rottie

Why are you all holding on to the GSD it to has alot working against them with both health issues and working abillity ???

You would come to a GSD board and ask why we wouldn't want a Rottie or Mal instead?  There are "issues" with every breed and you pick your battles.  We've chosen the GSD because of what they bring, health issues and all.  There's also plenty of drive in many lines and the ones that don't have the drives are not chosen for work, but show or pets.  There is a niche for those with drive, as well as those without.  Some here also like other breeds, including those you mention and are inclusive, as opposed to taking away from our love and devotion for the GSD.

Mals are too easy, and because they seem 'shallow' to me.  Would depend on the working context also.  For herding/tending as an example, I think the gsd is much better; for it's ability to work independantly of the handler, with a wider range of thresholds allowing a finer tuned ability to self regulate it's drive levels (should, anyway) and explosive responses, and to anticipate an event so as to intervene before its occurance.  GSD's are a 'thinking' dog, less 'reactive' than mals.

If you truly don't know the answer to your question, then you truly never will!!!!

have you ever thought that it is because we love the gsd breed.

I agree with wanting the "thinking" and not just the explosive, so GSD. As far as the rottie, I would think changing the breed has more to do with perception and banning of the breed. You truly do not know Rotties if you can state they lack focus and drive.

Versality ?? , Iv'e never trained a Rottweiler or Malinois Guide Dog !!!

by milder batmusen on 03 May 2010 - 20:05

well I dont really think it is at stupid question in Denmark we have alot of people who works with a certain type of breed like the mal not because they love the breed more than ofters but only because its a breed they can get the big points in the competitions

so you dont have to work a certain breed and that breed of dog is their favorit
