Okay, I'm trying to get my new computer set up, and it's NOT going smoothly!

First of all, even though I ask Windows to remember me between sessions, it always logs me out of my favourite websites when I close the browser. How do I fix this?

Secondly, the new mail program, Windows Live Mail is a PITA!!  I though the instructions said I could keep my current e-mail address, but when I log into the program (after having my old-email verified) it tells me I don't have an inbox yet, and I need to set up a new Hotmail account!  I DON'T WANT A HOTMAIL ACCOUNT!!  I want to use my old e-mail address, which I accessed through Outlook Express! (I can also get it through Webmail, so I still have access to new e-mails, but not my contacts and address book.)

Help, please??

I still have vista, I hate new programs. Do you have tech support with your new computer? I have a real nice young man down the street that helps me with mine.
Always,
Cee

First part easy dump IE 8 and get Firefox

In windows Live mail (yes hate it here too!) Go to Tools then Accounts and set up your email manually.  You'll need your log in password and POP and smtp settings.

Need any help IM me.

Windows 7 is brilliant once it's in and configured.... getting it in can be a right royal pain in the you know what!

Agree with AmbiGSD, go for Firefox and check out some of the Addons/extensions
First add "Speed Dial" and set to start on opening , this gives you 9 (nine) small pages on screen of your favorite websites, thus you have 9  Favorites to choose from including PDB
Then add "Last Pass"  this is a password manager, saves all your passwords encrypted on lastpass web server and opens up  on Firefox start, auto-login, fills in personal details on websites, generates passwords and because it is web based you can access your passwords on anybodies computer by going to Lastpass.com and entering your Lastpass Login details, better than "Roboform" which does similar but needs paying for.
Many other useful addons include:- CoolIris, Adblock, Autopager, Image Zoom,  Browse Images, Cool Previews, StreetMap, and loads more.
E-mail Got to be Mozilla Thunderbird, but look for a separate Program called "ChoiceMail Free" will stop in a matter of hours all Spam, a bit difficult to set up but just follow on screen instructions and not to bad

Finally download a program called "MozBackup" will backup all Firefox & Thunderbird extensions, bookmarks, contacts, etc
but remember to save to a CD or other Device as if your Hard Drive goes down you will lose your backup, if this happens reload "MozBackup" on new drive and restore settings

Hope this is of help

Windows 7 is the best OS from Microsoft, better than WinXP which was good, not had one Blue screen since early January

I will say I haven't had a blue screen yet. The worst thing it did was to change almost ALL the icons on my desktop to images that opened the photo viewing program. Then, when I tried to change them back it wouldn't let me. It said I needed administrator's approval!  Well, I AM THE BLOODY ADMINISTRATOR!!  No one else uses this computer but ME!

I finally had to do a 'system restore' to fix things. NOT fun!

The password issue has resolved itself. I think they just got wiped out when I did the system restore. I still can't get my e-mail up and running, though, and now I find my Palm Zire 72 isn't compatible with a 64 bit system! I've found some fixes online, but so far have been unable to get it to work. It has all my appointments, birthdays and contacts in it, as well as the drug program I use for my nursing, so losing it is a HUGE PITA!

[sigh]  Sorry, just need to bitch...now, back to trying to get it to work!

Thank you for the suggestions!

I still have XP...

Never have seen the blue screen of death, yet, in more than four years of using it.  I have, however, had a fake blue screen once...Thought I'd crashed and turned out to be a virus faking all of this.  Once I got that all cleaned out, it was all better.  XP beats the daylights out of the old 95/98...But I've heard that 7 is better.  I'll find out someday...

I am getting ready to convert, I have the program and have been putting it off since January. After this I may put it off awhile longer.

Please go for it, it is better than WinXP

Different but better, the best endorsement I can give it is that you really don`t know its there, it just works

To anybody looking to upgrade over Vista, Don`t
Do a clean install, my Wifes Laptop was upgraded From Vista and has minor problems (boot up & Close down mainly) but my XP computer with a clean install ruins smoothly

Go for it

How to Install Windows 7 my way!

Step 1

Find a f***in drive that will fit 1TB of backed up s*** onto it

Step 2

Realise that Hubby is NOT going to allow you to delete his porn so you can back up to the biggest available external HD

Step 3

Take trip to PC world to buy a new 1TB drive

Step 4

Duck when you tell Hubby the Western Digital caviar was only 15 quid dearer than the shite Tech guys drives at PC world...besides if he'd have let you delete his porn...you wouldn't need a new HD now would you!

Step 5

Insert new hard drive, yell at Hubby when he says there aren't enough sata connections and ask him if he has been to spec savers lately cos you can see 2 spare!

Step 6

Spend 3 hrs wondering why your BIOS can't find the damn drive.

Step 7

Initialise drive and try again

Step 8

Spend another 4 hrs trying various CD/DVD drives in PC to find one that works....

Step 9

Throw 6 CD rom drives in the bin cos they are all shagged.

Step 10

Realise that windows 7 is a DVD and you need to buy a new DVD drive

Step 11

Point at the counter guy at PC world and tell him not to say one f****in word! Pick up DVD drive, mutter to self as entering PIN and try again.

Step 12

2 hrs later realise that you haven't partitioned the f***in drive so cheat and chuck a 30GB partion on and leave the rest of the drive til you have an OS on it.

Step 13

Finally install Windows 7 Blink and it's done!

Step 14

Pour Large vodka and drink....rinse and repeat til you're pissed enough to not remember how much money it has just cost you!!!
By which time the rest of your 1TB drive should just about have formatted!!

And all that because my Graphics card cooked!

LOL, Ambi!

This all started because my monitor bit the dust. Then, I thought, hey they have some excellent prices on PCs in this store. My PC is 5 or 6 years old, and the hard drive is starting to make funny noises, and do the odd thing it's never done before, like hanging up when I first try to go online. Wouldn't it be wiser to replace it BEFORE the hard drive crashes on me?

I didn't see any computers that I really liked, though, so just bought a cheap 17 inch monitor.

A couple of weeks later, Staples had Canon 4 in 1 machines for sale for $60!!! WOW! My all-in-one has been limping along for a couple of years now. You have to feed the paper into the printer by hand just soooo, or it won't pick  it up, and when you scan, it sounds like it's constipated! The loud grunting noises it makes makes me certain that something is going to stop working soon.  So, when I saw that price, I grabbed one. They were a popular item, and I just managed to get the last one in the store.

While I was there, I decided to check out their PCs, and saw exactly what I wanted, a nice, sleek HP with Windows 7 as the OS. I took it home and hooked it up....

and my modem immediately died!!

So, now EVERYTHING is new, except my computer speakers, and my D_Link router!
