Its best if you have a lot of things going in your favor, Don't do fresh express on questionable males and don't do frozen on questionable bitches ,The benefit of transcervical is its less invasive and does not require anethesia, the downside is that endoscopes are expensive and not all Vets have them and bypassing the cervix is not always easy some dogs are convoluted inside or at least some of mine are  Surgical allows them to visualize the uterus and resolve any cystic ovaries, its reccomended for older questionable bitches and its really pretty minor surgery. The end result is the same though depositing the  semen in the uterus.  As far as frozen I really can't think of any reason to do that on a living male unless the dog was being campaigned and the thing with doing frozen on long dead males is the semen gets antiquated because they will just keep coming up with new DNA tests .AI is probably more common place in Labradors they are easy to collect Some Gsds are difficult to collect they can get cranky if they percieve they are being ''manhandled'' so to speak

Lief
That is a BEAUTIFUL lab. I love the head on that dog!!

I have never done an AI breeding but am planning on doing one in June. I am going to be breeding my Czech female, an Erri z Blatenskeho Zamku daughter, to Ozzy Barnero. I wil be using frozen semen and am going to do a transervical AI, since Ozzy will not be here in the USA when Xena is ready to be bred.
What is the success rate of something like this with German Shepherds??

Thanks JYL!!  I would be more prone to do the surgical with frozen and  from what I'm told its important how they warm it back up and its a super small window so you have to wait almost 3 days post ovulation which is  very nerve racking cause all you can think about is the expiration date on those eggs!! but if the sperm is viable there is no reason it shouldn't take, pull progesterone early and often though!!  there was a youtube video showing how they warm it up I'll see if i can find it

Thank You Lief. There is a vet clinic that is a couple hours away from me that specializes in AI breedings. I am going to talk to them to get some information. I just want to make sure that this breeding TAKES..I plan on keeping a male from this breeding.  Again, that is a really nice yellow lab!

I will post when I do the breeding.

A friend of mine has a litter of 10 from an AI breeding (chilled).

Procedure was done by a reproductive specialist in Tennessee and was surgically implanted. He left the bitch there for a few days so that the vet could determine the optimal day for breeding.

Worked well for him.

Best,
Rik
