Dear Sir,
Disturbing you. But I am really helpless about it. Jenny(my GSD puppy) got injury in her leg repeatedly.
Now she(Jenny) is of 4 months of age. She was very much energatic in nature from the very beginning. The de-warming was done at time. Vaccnination has also been completed. Only the vaccnination aganinst rabies is required to push.
At the age of 2 months 15 days she got an injury in her rare leng (left) while running on the floor. After that she was limping for a long time. We rushed to a vet and the vet suggested to go for an X ray of her hip. We did it and the X Ray was no taken properly. We rushed to the vet again and he has examined and come to a conclusion that there may be a hidden injurry in her left leg. He suggested to go for an injection arachitol 3l ( Each ml Arachitol 3l contains: Cholecalciferol IP 300000 IU (7.5 mg) Arachis Oil IP) is for 5 days interval and an injection trinurosol continuous five days. We continued these and Jenny was gradually being cured.
I made a cannel for her. It was 3.5mtr X3 mtr and 3 mtr height. The flore has been made of shortly spaced iron wire. The canel is cover by wooden bar with a little spacing.
But after some days again she has sustained an injury in the front leg (Left) and again going on limping for number of days. Recently again the rare left leg got injured and she is limping again. We rushed to another vet and after examine he told that Jeny has ricket and the constitution of the body is very poor. He advice to give injection Arachitol 3l with a week interval for one and half months. Also to inject Tonophosphan (Each ml contains Toldimphos Sodium and phenylethyl Alcohol ) . The vet also suggested to give MEGAFLEX Powder 1 spoon twice daily up to 15 days, 1 ½ spoon twice days from 15th to 30th day, 2 spoon twice daily up to 45th day.
Now I am giving food three times to her (8 Am, 1 1.3 Pm, and 8 Pm). All three time I give Rice boiled chicken(50 gm), vegetables .
Please suggest what to do. The legs are too sensative. All of my family member and myself are very much worried. Jenny cant put her leg on the floor also and repeatedly got injusy. The pic also attached along with the mail.
As per the VET I made these mistake:
1. Feeding Calcium Syrup from begining.
2. Lacking of sufficient meat in the diet. Also he told that as the puppy has a poor weight it may be cured.
Importantly I could not make her doing exercise as her injurry. So she has not got ample sunlight.
Please let me know either it is a case of Rickets or not. If yes then what should be the remidy and is it curable?
Looking forward your valuable suggestion.
Thanks & Regards

The cure for rickets is Vitamin D. And sunshine. Nothing less, nothing more. If this truly IS rickets (which I doubt) it can be cured, if it is not too far advanced.
Being in a kennel with a wire floor is going to be hard on any dog's feet. Your dog needs a solid floor. If she defecates and urinates in her kennel, put down straw or shredded newspaper. But by the age of 2 months, you should be starting to house train her, and she should not do this in her kennel, unless you don't let her outside often enough.
I cannot see your pictures. If you e-mail them to me, I will post them for you. (Address removed, see below.)
What country are you from? From the sound of what the vet is giving this puppy, I do not think he knows what he is doing!
How old is Jenny now?

Dear Sunsilver,
Thank you very much for your reply in pedegree database. I am from India.
Actually the vet has gently strike on her back bone and all the other joints in legs. But there were no such flickering in her legs (As our leg shiver while striking in our knee joint). Also when I examine in my puppy's left leg(rare leg) I felt some constitutioal diference in the different elbow joint for different legs. Most importantly Jenny got injuries off and on in her legs (left front leg and left rare leg).
Secondly from the very begining as Jenny struggling from the pain I would not let her go outside for urinating. I thought to start house train after her recovery, but to no avail. Also she has been kept in rest. Now Jenny is exactly 4 months old. And the weight is 11.5 Kg.
The Vitamin D3 injection is given her once in a week. Also Tonophosphan (Each ml contains Toldimphos Sodium and phenylethyl Alcohol ) injected one day after. I message Vitamin A-D oil every day in her legs. The MEGAFLEX Powder has been given her twice daily mixed in her food.
Is it curable? How much time required.
I have sent the pictures to your mail. Please help and suggest. I am feeling really restless.

The illness of Rickets in Dog is present in young dogs due to the lack or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D. is characterized by a tendency toward the formation of long bones in the legs and a convexity of the diaphysis. You will notice bone swellings developing in the extremities of the long bones of the inferior members. There is a tendency in puppies for the long bones to arch outwards due to the pressure of the body weight. In more advanced cases, the complete bone structure is deteriorated, and the dog has a lot of difficulties getting around, developing an abdominal hydropic state. The lack of sunlight is also a contributing cause of rickets, as well as a bad diet. In order for the animal to recuperate, he must be under veterinarian treatment. The case can worsen notably, leading to an irreversible state of invalidity.
"deficiance of Calcium or Vitamin D"
Just checken flesh will not give it enough calcium......does this puppy have any large (non-chicken) bones to chew on?

Tanmoy,I would like to ask why this young dog is not on a Large Breed Puppy food which WILL have the proper calcium-phos balance and ratio as well as being in the right amount.Forgive me for saying this as I mean no disrespect to you and am only thinking of the well being of your puppy but do yourself and this pup a favour and find her a proper large breed puppy food.

Tanmoy,
There are many people in India who have German Shepherd dogs. Some visit this forum and leave messages. Please write a message in your own language and leave it here. Make a new post and put a title in your language. Maybe one of your people will answer and you can talk to them.
The puppy needs better food. She also MUST have the right vitamins and minerals. A good quality food now is necessary. The people who live in India can tell you what food is available. At this time, the vets can tell you how to help replace Vitamin D. And the puppy MUST have sunlight as well, but not too much. Ricketts can be cured, but it is possible that damage will be done that will last her lifetime if you do not fix the problem now. I am not sure why the vet strikes the dog looking for what we call "reflex" and there is none there. Perhaps this too is related to mistakes in feeding and caring for the dog.
Solid floor on kennel, fresh water, good food, and sunlight, are needed. Also, please find a countryman who can help you understand what you must do to have a healthy dog.
Good luck.

Tanmoy,
What your vet has given you is probably a good thing. Some medicines have different names in English, of course, so it is difficult to know always what the medicine is. But yes, this puppy sounds like it needs a much better diet, sunlight and some vitamin D to help it. Sunsilver will also have some additional good ideas for you. But do find someone there in India who is experienced with German Shepherd dogs and puppies so that a countryman can help you. In that way, there will not be mistake in understanding.
Is your puppy getting better?
Good luck.
